    The Background:
I have a live DVD of Mint 9 and a live CD of Ubuntu 10.4, both of which run on my laptop (HP dv7t) without issue. I have an older Windows desktop computer (circa 2004) that has been running very sluggishly. Instead of reinstalling XP, I decided to try my Mint and Ubuntu live media on this machine, but neither the Mint 9 liveDVD nor the Ubuntu 10.4 liveCD would boot into gnome. However, openSUSE 11.2 (KDE) live media works fine.

    The Problem:
I tried the Mint 9 liveDVD 5 or 6 times and it hung each time, except once when it booted to the terminal. Ubuntu usually booted to the terminal, though it hung on an occasion or two. A quick google revealed that some people have been able to “sudo startx” or “sudo service gdm start” to get into gnome. For me, it resulted in a blank screen and the need to reboot.

A number of I/O errors were listed on the screen during the boot process

Another error message was: “Unexpectedly disconnected from boot status daemon”

    The Computer:
    AMD Athlon XP (Barton) 3000+
    MSI nForce2 motherboard
    512MB RAM
    ATi 9600XT

    The Miscellany:
I am using the 32-bit versions of the distros

I may try Mint 8 (Helena), PCLOS, and/or other distros this weekend to see what works

Because it works, I may just stick with openSUSE 11.2 and try 11.3 when it is released next week

Obviously, I have limited (read: almost zero) experience with linux

    The Question:
Any initial thoughts on why Mint 9 and Ubuntu 10.4 will not boot successfully on this computer, but openSUSE 11.2 will? I welcome any relevant thoughts or comments.

I had a problem with mint9 dvd trying to run it persistent from flash drive.

Try the Mint 9 CD version instead. I think its the same except without open office and a couple other apps. If you do install, you can add them back in easily.
