I finally got wireless running in Kubuntu but I am encountering (rarely) system slowdown and (even rarer) system freezing/lockup. I was wondering if anyone can recommend a good general system tweaking program that I can find via Adept Package Manager. I tried installing Powertweak but I couldn't find the program in the K menu. Any help is appreciated.

I don't know of one...you can do whatever tweaks you want by hand.

On a more important note, Linux isn't like Windows where you need all these apps to do what you want. IN THE FIRST PLACE, your Kubuntu install should not be slow nor should you have freezing and lockups. I would re-do the install if I were you.

Your Linux box should run clean and lean from day one until you choose to upgrade to the next version of the distro (in your case, maybe in April for Feisty). No antivirus. No. tweaking programs. No ad-ware removal. No mess.

It doesn't regularly experience these problems; very rarely, and usually when I am running one or two root applications.

Btw, I don't know how to do these tweaks myself. Surely Linux must be optimized to run at its best?

You can post questions about tweaking as needed.

As far as your second note - mostly, yes. Kubuntu is 'optimised.' Remember that it is less tested than its GNOME sibling, but that should not mean it's less optimized.

But, if you have a dual-core processor, make sure you are running the appropriate Kernel (686 - SMP enabled). There is another thread here about this.

I keep hearing about people doing things "by hand". Seeing as I come from Windows, I have NO idea how to do this. Perhaps I have to edit text files?

    - Where do I do this?
    - Do I need any programming experience to do such modifications?

Teach me, I am your student! :D
