What are your impressions of operating systems like THIS

    - Linux XP
    - and what looks like Ubuntu 8.10

Would I be able to easily install these on a laptop without an operating system?

This should be moved into the Linux section. :)

To help I read this reveiw on e-bay.

Plus I don't even believe there is a 2009 version of Linux XP, that I am aware of. There is a 2008, but I thought I read somewhere they stopped working on it...

As the review says you can download the Ubuntu iso file to burn onto a CD, and the download is free.

So no I would stay away from that deal.
If you do decide to download Ubuntu for free (Which is nice for newer people looking into Linux.), you should find it pretty simplistic to install on a computer.
If you run into problems installing, you can ask around on the Linux thread.
You can also read the Linux Switcher's Guide to help you along.

    Hope that helps...

Never mind with the eBay link, you're right I think I need to create an installation disc of Ubuntu 8.10..

Just mount the files on a CD and access them from the laptop and install?

stay away from ebay... linux is free!

    go to http://www.ubuntu.com/

download the .iso file and burn that to a cd/dvd using a program like magic iso or something similar.

from there put the cd into your drive and it should boot into a "live cd" mode.
from there you can test out the OS without doing any damage to your computer or changing the files in anyway.

the big thing is wifi support... if it's there "out of the box" then you're golden, if not you're going to need to find out what card you have an find a work around

but you'll be able to figure all this out using the live cd, this forum.. and the ubuntu forums.

Lets say the wireless card is the same that's in my Asus right now, which picked up my connections immediately in Ubuntu 8.10, should wireless work fine or did windows vista have anything to do with helping the 8.10 find connections initially?

under those conditions (same wifi card), the wifi will work perfectly. Vista has nothing to do with finding connections.

I wouldn't call it a scam, some uninformed people are leaving positive feedback, which means all he is doing is selling burned cd's for $7.99 for what you can obviously do for free.
