I'm using mint 12 (lisa) which is debian and it runs like a dream, no issues at all.

Mint Debian Edition is great. On the plus side, it's fast, fast, fast and a rolling release! On the downside, you don't have access to the nice goodies offered by the ubuntu community via ppas.

I've got Mint Debian on a few machines. The only times I've ever had problems are when I unknowingly messed something up. They're super fast too, on par with Ubuntu's boot times.

Only think I don't like is that Cinnamon 1.4 on my Core2Duo machine is flaky and unstable. The screen flickers on & off when closing programs, it holds a cpu core at around 30% use, some programs show artifacts of drop-down menu windows which don't go away unless the program is closed and the fade in/out effects are slow. It'll be real nice when it's more polished and customizable though.

Mate I remember being pretty smooth but I use xfce on my main machines. If going for Mint Debian, their update cycle is totally different than the Ubuntu based versions. You get large update packs every few months instead of stuff being pushed out when ready. If you don't like that, you can change your repositories to pure Debian but that needs a bit more attention paid to updating.
