The Notebook Review forums were hosted by TechTarget, who shut down them down on January 31, 2022. This static read-only archive was pulled by NBR forum users between January 20 and January 31, 2022, in an effort to make sure that the valuable technical information that had been posted on the forums is preserved. Since there has been a recent surge in threads asking for info on distro x, i thought it would be appropriate to make a thread where all the distro reviews were linked in an organized manner. Feel free to make reviews of any Linux distro you feel fit, and post the link here so i can add it. Please structure the reviews like the Mandriva Linux One 2008 GNOME Review by me. Feel free to add sections that you see fit.

Make another one and see which one 'sticks' lol btw, wiki's are a wonderful thing for how-to's....no linux wiki here? Actually a subform for that, just sticky's should be set up....but who am I...... :D

Make sure you install it in reality, not just in a VM or as a Live CD.

I probably will be, but this thread can include reviews of stuff in VM, or LiveCD too so it's alright. I'm looking forward to seeing many reviews from you as you're an "Ubuntu User/Linux Tester". ;)

    Trust me, you will ;)
Still, that review would be Bias, VMs are way easier to set up and Live CDs are slower.

Which is why it's stated what it was running under, so that people know what to expect for what they do. I feel reviews like that are required too as it gives people a better sense of what to expect if they use LiveCD's or VM's.

I suggest creating a seperate thread for each review, then linking the threads here.
That way, discussion related to a particular distro will be easier.

Maybe, i guess it would be alright to ask. The main thing we need to wait on is more reviews, they can't give us much if the thread is small and unproductive.

Creating separate threads is a good idea...Also, it would be good if you could use a specific pattern for the reviews (e.g. like the NBR laptops reviews).

No don't change that one...but if everybody could use similar categories/structure for the next reviews it would be great (e.g. installation, ease of use, looks,pros/cons, etc.)

It's not linux, it's OS X's kernel, darwin paired up with GNU. It's not a full distro, you have to have os X or a Darwin system installed(trying to figure that out lol).

Hey guys - especially you, Zoid, my fanatical distro-hopping friend. A few minutes ago I just got a huge surprise. Last night I downloaded two versions of Gentoo: minimal install, and 2008 Live CD Beta. I forgot to label the disks so tossed the first one I came to into this clunker eMachines desktop. I haven't done anything except click on the browser and come to this site. It's very fast as expected, but also my graphics are recognized without doing a damn thing! The 1920x1200 screen resolution is perfect and the text is as clear and crisp as Dream Linux, Ubuntu and XP!

Obviously, I'm using the 2008 version of Gentoo's installer disk. The last time I tried Gentoo the screen was set at about 600x400 (ok, I'm exaggerating slightly, but not by much). Everything was blurry and I couldn't get a damn thing to work properly (cause: user is a genuine dummy! lol).

I don't know exactly if or when I'm going to install this distro, because I know that no matter how much easier it now is compared with the last version, full installation won't be a picnic. I'm sure as hell impressed so far though. Zoid, check it out.

@bmwrob.....changed my avatar back to the 'hopper' lol I've got that live beta CD btw, which is probably no surprise :D It looked to me like they're trying to bring it up to speed, install and automated wise, with the rest of the crop....it did look nice....I didn't put it on the harddrive yet after glancing the bug reports in the forum, but that's another I'm keeping an eye on.....let us know....they had some financial probs a while back, would like to see them make a strong comeback.

Gentoo really needs to bring out the 2008 final, the beta2 is the last one before final's release. We really need the latest kernel, I think 2008 will be either using 2.6.24 or 2.6.25.

bmwrob, does the live dvd come bundled with all the software? If it does you might as well try Sabayon. If it doesnt Id sure love to know the speed difference between a binary installed openoffice and openoffice compiled from sources. Also is it kde only, or can you choose between gnome and kde
