I'm trying to find a laptop for under $2000 that can support decent 3d gaming under linux. We make video games in linux and need to be able to "show-off" at trade shows, but as a new company, we're on a budget. Any suggestions?

Should this be posted in the "What Notebook Should I Buy?" category?

I'm presuming that since your looking for a machine to promote linux games, peak OpenGL performance is a must. I like the look of the Asus A8Jm (nVidia 7600 512MB dedicated) myself, or one of the high end dells.

Ubuntu 6.06 (the one released a few days ago) works perfectly on my A8JM, out of the box..........so far.

Not yet, but I will try it out later. I'll reply here when I do.

If you are considering an A8JM, trust me, its one heck of a laptop. I love mine, and everyday that I use it, I like it more.

Ok, the MMC/SD card reader works fine, out of the box, but I need to find an application to try the webcam.

    excellent...

I think Kopete supports webcams, but its a KDE app

EDIT: BTW, does your model have bluetooth?

Surprisingly, bluetooth generally works "out of the box" these days... probably due to the fact that all implementations (onboard, dongle, etc) are based on only 2-3 chipsets.

If your's doesn't work, ensure you've installed the BlueZ bluetooth packages. Packages are available for all current distros.

Recent builds of Gnome Meeting also support webcams, IIRC.

excellent. I have bluetooth on my current lappy, and I can't live without my bluetooth mouse. seeing as I dropped 60$ on it (a nice logitech) i still want to be able to use it.

    Mine doesn't have bluetooth.

I did a hard drive install of Ubuntu 6.06, installed the nvidia-glx driver via synaptics package manager, then had to manually edit xorg.conf to set the driver to 'nvidia' rather than 'nv' and add 1200x800 as a resolution option. A reboot later, and my display looks great.

As previously stated, the MMC/sd card reader works fine.

Wireless works great, and connects automagically on boot. I'm very happy about this. :D I'm typing this in ubuntu right now.

The webcam shows up in the device manager as a usb webcam, so it will most likely work fine. I'll try to test it out soon.
