Hello everyone, I'm sorry if this has been asked before, but I'm bad at searching and didn't find anything...

    Here's the poblem:
Someone's XP laptop failed, possibly boot sequence.

To recover some files I'd like to supply him with a Linux Boot CD ( Booting off the actual CD)

Can annyone provide me with a link for a Linuc distribution that will run an easily understandable Linux distribution (for XP users) to recover files onto a USB media??

Thank you very much in advance :)

If the machine runs the cd you may want to try the "wubi" installation from the cd to install from within windows, and make it dual boot. Then when in ubuntu you can gain access to all of the windows data files from the host folder. You can read more at the wubi website.

Thanks, I'll see if that makes sense to the person with the problem.
(He doesn't know a lot about computers)

(And I don't know a lot about Linux distributions, I do Dual Boot my old laptop with SUSE 10 though, had SUSE years earlier on another laptop with ME)

The old Windows ME laptop was running SUSE Linux & ME on 2 partitions.

    There is one thing though:
Would Virtualization have to be active for what you suggestedon XP??

Since I'm new I can't post links, but you can google linux, wubi, and ubuntu for lots of documentation. The wubi site will tell you under faq about finding your friends windows data files. Good luck. I would stick to ubuntu 8.04 lts for now. If your friends laptop has an intel wireless card linux should configure it. If his laptop has another wireless card it will take some work to get it working. You can always use a network cable if need be. I have done what you plan to do many times on windows machines with great success.
