    Hei guys,

I have just converted to Ubuntu.   I was trying to set up my wired 200 mbps :D internet connection, but got lost when it came to setting up the subnet mask and default gateway. How do I set IPv4 settings in Ubuntu 9.10.

    Thanks in advance people. :)

The network settings are under System->Administration->Network. Click the interface then click properties.

I assume you have a router. You should be able to use DHCP to automatically set the IP address. If not, the subnet mask will be 255.255.0.0 if your internal IP address is in the 192.168.x.x range. If it is in the 10.x.x.x range it will be 255.0.0.0. If it is in the 172.16.x.x range it will be 255.240.0.0. The default gateway is the IP address of your router. This is typically x.x.x.1 or x.x.x.254.

If you are directly connected to the internet through a modem, you should be able to use DHCP. If you have a static IP address and cannot use DHCP, your subnet mask will be determined by your ISP, as will the default gateway.

If you are dual booting windows and all else fails, you can run ipconfig /all and write down the settings and copy them to linux.

On your network indicator Right-click and then click “Edit Connections. In the open window look at the “Wired” tab. Then select the “Auto eth0” connection and click “Edit.” Click the “IPv4 Settings” tab

actually i was multi-booting with win7, till both crashed. :( :( i got the following message:
    " GRUB loading
    Attribute "?" missing"
Neither of the OS s were loading...so I had to do a clean install of win7(thats what i got with my sxps16). Is this because of dual booting?

As a wild guess I'd say a file got corrupted in your grub setup. You don't need to reload windows over that, you can use the windows installer CD to get to the recovery console and do bootrec /fixboot and it should boot again. You could also have used the grub recovery directions from somewhere, if it's grub2 I have a generic guide on my website.

its okay if u dual boot windows 7 yes..just partition part of your HD for linux..or u can use an external..(and if u need help there's ppl here for that :) )
anyways..for beginners the recommended one is ubuntu..
if you want u could always download both of the lives cd's of fedora and ubuntu and try them both out. through live cd option it allows you to get a feel for the distro and try it out.
Good luck with linux..hope you like it! :)

    go into synaptic package manager..download swfdec.and flashplugin-nonfree..
those are the ones i use for flash..
    or go to adobe.com http://get.adobe.com/flashplayer/?promoid=BUIGP
and from the dropdown box select .deb for ubuntu 8.04+
    hope this helps :)

mmm..i think what's happening is that you are trying to install a .deb compiled for 32 bits (i386 architecture) but your OS is 64 bits and the package manager is complaining about it. However, the best way to install applications is to use Synaptic or Add/Remove apps; since that way they'll be updated automatically.

If the app is not in the repositories, you should download it in 64 bits flavour

this here is a pre release of adobe flash player for 64bit linux systems
    http://labs.adobe.com/downloads/flashplayer10_64bit.html

also..what exact error message does it give you when trying to install something using apt?
can you also post the output of uname -o..or try uname -m..?
