Ubuntu 11.10: Fast And Friendly
The most surprising thing is that this boot time was accomplished on very unremarkable hardware. If it will boot in 12 seconds with a HDD, I wonder if it will break the crucial 10 second threshold with a SSD?

Very interesting, especially about the Gnome desktop environment being replaced a new new light DM. Thanks for sharing.

Wow...I'm very impressed. Just another reason to try Ubuntu.
-
I clocked my Fedora 15 install (specs in my signature). 11 seconds to get past the bios boot screen (but that includes the delay built into the bios to give you time to select other boot options). At 54 seconds the Fedora desktop shows up... so about 43 seconds to boot. Another 10-15 seconds to get WiFi up and running. Ubuntu gets WiFi connected as soon as the desktop shows up.

Windows 8's hybrid speed boots up incredibly fast. Is this using similar methods?
-
Wow, if this keeps up and remains true into the final release, I may have to give Ubuntu another look. I'm primarily using Linux Mint Debian the most right now (although I also use Kubuntu and OpenSuse from time to time), and while I'm happy with its performance, it does boot pretty slowly.

Windows 8's "hybrid boot" really appears to be hibernation by default. -

SSD does make a lot of difference.
- Windows 7 boots in 10s with fresh install.
- Ubuntu boots in about 13s. (couple seconds wasted during GRUB) -
Oh, and which version of Ubuntu are you using? Kernel? -

The ubuntu version that i'm using is the newest 11.04 from ubuntu's download site. -
Can't wait for the release!

When dual booting Ubuntu 11.4 they seemed to boot around the same time.
When Digsby moves to linux and 11.10 comes out I'll move back to dual booting. -
And Unix-like OS is inherently quick to boot? Isn't that stretching it a bit? -
Make the default UI what you choose it to be and Id be somewhat happy. I have both debian and had ubuntu booting in 30 seconds on my x200s without an ssd. Would I like instant on or near instant on? Yes. Does it make a world of difference? Not sure as I have boot and user passwords that take extra time when booting. Will this entice me to return to ubuntu? No.

The current program ubuntu 10.04 and up use to boot fast is called ureadahead. This reads all the files needed for boot and sticks them into one long sequential file. If you change kernels etc then on the next reboot you get a regular boot from the individual files and ureadahead makes a new flat file during boot tha twill work next time.
