Its through a landline, with the network configure thing i can get it to dial out then make the "dial up" connection sound but at the end of the sound it cuts out then nothing happens. I tried using wvdial it will dial out then i get the "If you would like to make call please hang up and try again..." recording.

So the modem is recongized and set up in linux. Thats usually the hard part. It sounds like the settings in Network Manager are messed up, like its using the wrong tone values.

try taking a read thru my Dial-up diary
    http://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?t=480717

It's a little out-of-date but the general idea still holds true.

You've got a laptop modem that actually works? That's amazing. The only way I've been able to dial out is with my trusty USR external. I still want to try one of those Actiontec USB/serial modems.

if you heard the operator say "If you would like to make a call" then you got the phone number wrong. Try entering the phone number again.

Tell you what, I'd try pppconfig, as described in the above thread. Then come on back and tell us what happened.

BTW, dial-up sucks in Linux because of the huge downloads. But if you can borrow some wireless or hard-wired broadband for updates and for downloading programs, then just use dial-up to get email and for light web surfing, it's better than nothing.

Ive already seen that thread and it was no help. Does anyone know how to make wvdial use pulse instead of tone. My other computer is set to pulse and it works fine but when i set it to tone i get the "if you would like to make a call" message. Also can someone help me install gnome-ppp i would like to try it but can figure out how to get it installed. Thanks

Most of the log looks pretty typical, from my limited experience.

    This one doesn't.

I'm not any good at networking stuff, but an IP address of 0.0.0.0 doesn't seem right. Do you have any friends who are also on dial-up but use different ISP's than yours? If they'd let you try to log into their accounts (I'd suggest using pppconfig) it might help to figure out what's going on.

Also, I wanted to make sure you understood that gnome-ppp is just a front-end for wvdial. If you can't get it to work from wvdial, gnome-ppp isn't going to help.

i tried pppconfig but the pon command does nothing. Also i forgot to mention this but every time i restart the computer i have to reinstall the driver package to make the modem work. I know it is already installed because i click the button that says reinstall package when i open the folder containing the driver (it is a Conexant HSF modem driver) nothing will even dial unless i reinstall the package.
