This problem is very different from the recent issues in the Linux area. I'm trying to install Office 2000 on Linux using the latest version of Wine.

Unfortunately, in order to do so, I need Internet Explorer 5 or later installed, and that's what this thread is about. I have a clean install of Wine, I have DCOM98 installed (I'm running in Windows 98 mode), and the installer for IE6 seemed to have finished without an error.

However, when I navigated to the iexplorer.exe and opened it with Wine for the first time, I got a prompt asking whether I wanted to install something called Gecko. I selected "sure why the hell not" (otherwise known as the OK button). It downloaded what looked like the installation components and as it finished the window disappeared and never reinitialized, leaving me with a blank window entitled "Wine Internet Explorer"; I'm stuck and have no idea of what to do. I've looked around and it looks like I'm the only one with this problem. Can someone help?

Can't really help you. But you are better off Running XP on VMWare and installing Office 2007 on it. Thats what I do. Runs fast and Flawless.

Office 2000 is the only office I've gotten to work on Wine so far. I never tried 2007 on wine.

Also, did you set Wine on XP mode?

I've tried XP mode, but I suppose you're right; I don't want to spend long just getting one app running.

I'm looking at VMware's website and the program is not free. Can anyone suggest an alternative?

You can get VMWare server for free. It's nearly the same as VMware Workstation, but it allows you to have remote Operating Systems. It allows you to create and edit VMs on your computer, as well as install VMware Tools, which will speed up the OS and make it look more fluid. You're supposed to be an IT person to get it, but you can get it entering perfectly correct information, omitting information, or just making stuff up; it'll give you a serial key either way you do it. It's what I use, and it works pretty well in Linux. It's got a command-line based installer, but it's really simple to use, and with the audience that it's targeted at, it's not really a big deal.

I believe VMware 6.0 is still in beta and you can download for free, though I'm not sure. I may have gotten that email because I'm associated with them already.

Use IEs4Linux, you can tell him to put a link on your desktop.

Have you ever heard of VirtualBox?

I'm sorry, but why do you want to run IE on Linux? That's like porting a virus over to Linux. :D

Well, IE5 is a pre-requisite for installing Office 2000, which he wants.

Try the IEs4Linux thing, and if that doesn't work, you could try that new seamless virtualisation thing.

I've tried IEs4Linux before, it didn't work. What is this new virtualization technology you speak of?

It's similar to parallels, but for Linux. Google for Seamless Virtualization.

Seamless virtualization sounds great, but do I need Kubuntu 7.04 to run it, or can I set it up myself on 6.10?

I'm not sure if the rDesktop packages have been released for Edgy or not, you'd have to look that one up.

yeah... an update to rDesktop came down the backports a couple days ago in the edgy repos... you'll need a newer kernel than the edgy kernel, though, so you probably don't want to go through that hassle, plus there's the possibility that your CPU won't support the KVM virtualization.

run this line in the terminal, and if it gives you any results, you can, if not, your CPU won't support it. this is only available on Core2Duos released in very late 2006-on.

    Code:
    grep -E '^flags.*(vmx|svm)' /proc/cpuinfo
I would say that VMWare is probably the easiest method for getting a WinXP environment to run Office under.

Actually, any of the 667MHz Core Duos will run it, with the exception of the T2300E. And even if you cant use KVM, then you can always use Qemu.

I'll be the first to say it - why do you need M$ Office and then you won't need the scourge of the browser world, IE.

Open Office just doesn't cut it; the interface is hideous and difficult to navigate next to MS Office 2007. That is the version that I originally wanted to install, but I found that the most recent compatible version of MS Office was 2000.

Now I'm not sure. I have VirtualBox running, and XP works flawlessly. Very nice program I must say. Sometime this week I'm going to see if Office 2007 and my games run on it. If all goes well, I will find some time to wipe XP off my drive completely and reinstall my current Kubuntu configuration.

Ah, maybe because the T5500 replaced the T2300E. LOL. Bad luck. Looks like you'll have to stick to conventional VMs.

Lol, well I guess I never really thought I'd need it when I spec'ed this system. The only reason I'd need any kind of VM stuff is if I could get a 3D solution going for gaming. If I need one that bad I work at Intel so I suppose getting a new proc won't be the hardest things I've ever done.
