I just tried to install Ubuntu 7.10 on my T61 and now it wont boot up and just stalls on the boot up screen. And when I try to install another O.S it says there is no HDD.

System info is 2.4ghz,3gb mem, 100gb 7000rpm, nvidia 140, intel abgn wireless.

Also the recovery media I copied onto dvd's is not working either now either... :(

    I think I am f'ed.
    Help please :(

here is also what happens when I try to boot up Linux Mint:

/bin/sh cant access tty job content turned off
    (initramfs)

Did you test the recovery media to work before you installed Ubuntu? Can you make it through another Ubuntu installation? Do you see where I'm going with this?

If you didn't wipe the recovery partition you can actually use GRUB to boot to it like any Windows partition. It goes something like this:

    rootnoverify (hd0,0)
    chainloader +1
    makeactive

(hd0,0) is the first partition of the first disk. (hd0,1) is the second partition of the first disk. It's more than likely one of these, if it still exists. You can use cfdisk or gparted to see if it's still there.

It may just all be coincidental, though, and you have a hardware problem. Which is why I was asking about if you'd tested your restore media and if you can get through another Ubuntu install. If you can't get through an install with media tested good there's something else wrong.

When you try to boot to the restore partition through GRUB? Or when you try to boot to the restore CD?

It's probably about time to run some diagnostics. Lenovo has a built in hard drive diagnostic in the BIOS, though I haven't had it turn up errors until it's too late for me. Hopefully you'll have better luck. Then you already have a good memory test with the Ubuntu CD, just choose the memtest option and let that run overnight.

Don't worry, I promise you didn't destroy your laptop just by installing Ubuntu. It's quite possible that the stress of an installation routine took out a hard drive or your optical, though. If that's the case, the failure was inevitable and it's probably better to have it out of the way.
