i went to youtube and saw some Gutsy videos, and I found Compiz Fusion is so interesting....

Do u guys think it is a bad idea to install Gutsy Tribe 3 in my X61s? or I should stick with 7.04 until Oct?

What's the official word from the Ubuntu developers about using Gutsy now?

Whether you want to use it depends on what is most important to you. If stability is most important, don't use it. For instance, the initial releases of the 2.6.22 kernels for Gutsy introduced problems that were not present in Feisty. (e.g. DMA on some DVD drives was not available.) They've been fixed now but that's just an example to show that you may have problems with those early development versions of Gutsy.

Do you have enough space to dual boot it? Then you could try it without being stuck with it if there's a problem.

well, i dual boot with vista.
umm im not sure is it bcoz of santa rosa, 7.04 doesnt run that well. I was thinking 7.04 isnt stable anyway, might as well go to 7.10 :p

What kind of problems do you have with Santa Rosa platform in Feisty?
Just to clarify - last released Gutsy is Tribe5. I would not recommend it, unless your linux knowledge is above-average. Before Gutsy becomes stable in October there will be "bugs" like broken dependencies (happens pretty often now), some apps not working (like Openoffice in Kubuntu recently, fixed now), or maybe even some kernel related issues. So... it's your choice :)

im kinda in the same boat as you null84. I have a t61 and 7.04 just doesnt seem like it could be much better then gutsy. Sound is not working, I can not same monitor and resolution setting with the nvidia setting app, and my wireless is not working.

The only reason i use gutsy is because of the new nv drivers. My server, Powerbook, and Desktop are all running feisty. The nvidia settings app works for me, but not with the beta drivers. I must say, i have not updated gutsy in a while since i have been using my desktop for all my coding needs until i start school again on wed.

I am really itching to just install it on my linux partiton i have now. With all the things not working with feisty on my T61 im never using it anyways. Is there anyway I could hurt my vista partition or laptop, because thats the only reason i prob wouldnt do it

If you really wish to install Gutsy and get rid of Feisty, download Gutsy CD and upgrade. It SHOULD work fine and none of your data shall be lost. However please keep in mind that Gutsy is beta and there always IS some risk, even when upgrading to stable release (in the same way there's always some risk when you run Windows ;-) )

My Gusty experience is not that outstanding. It is good in some sense, but overall is not stable yet. Just because it is still in beta version. You will experience lot of upgrade very frequently. Some upgrade will not stable your machine and you won't know it unless you've done it.

Compiz Fusion is easier to install on ATI based machine now, even in Feisty.

I had played Gutsy for 2 month, and tired for frequent upgrading. Now, I turn back to Feisty.

We have Gutsy on three machines (well, its on a 4th but it doesn't work at all) one machine, Compaq, is flaky. The two Acers are doing good, after a little voodoo.

If you want my vote, wait until BETA.
