So I have had Ubuntu and XP dual-booting on my XP for about a year now. Everything was working fine until yesterday when I decided to use TP's System Update to flash my BIOS, upgrade Rescue and Recovery, etc. Usually when I boot up, GRUB gives me the option of choosing between Ubuntu, Ubuntu Recovery Mode, Win XP, and Win NT 2000. Now when I boot up a single word GRUB appears with the cursor blinking continuously. I can't get pass this screen even if I try booting into R&R. I'm currently out of the country (in Vietnam now to be exact) so I don't have any backup CD with me. I was wondering if there's a place I could download/buy the recovery CDs/DVDs online? I'm downloading Knoppix, hoping that it would get me into the system and somehow let me do system restore. I'm favoring resetting my laptop back to its factory setting since i don't actually use Ubuntu that much. Any idea would be greatly appreciated.

    Thanks.

If you can still boot up a regular CD, then boot up into a linux live session, go to the terminal, and type in grub, making sure that you're root (use the sudo command). After grub pops up in the terminal, type in find /boot/grub/stage1. It should give you something similar to (hd0,1), though this may be a bit different for you depending where you have Ubuntu installed on your system. Type in root (hd0,1) replacing (hd0,1) with whatever output grub gave you before. Then type in setup (hd0) and then restart your PC. That should help fix your grub problem.

EDIT: Although the instructions should work w/ Knoppix, if they don't, then download an Ubuntu live cd from ubuntu.com

Also, I installed Ubuntu 6.06 on my laptop. Should I get the live CD of that version or will 8.04 work fine?
