Im trying to use a external monitor on Ubuntu HH with my notebook

But the proper resolutions wont show up. I can only choose my notebook screen's resolutions which looks horrible on a bigger screen

Am i missing something? I tried a few applications but they didnt work either.

    Intel, Nvidia, VGA

My external monitors native res is 1680x1050 but the ubuntu settings limit me to my notebooks resolution. It looks messy and part of the screen is cut off when viewing on the ext. monitor
