Hi, I have just put my order in for an m6500 and am planning a linux base system and a couple of windows VM's for software compatibility like vpn clients.

Anyway I thought I would see if anyone has put linux on this beast yet, one of the major reasons I dug so deep into my pocket was the readhat certification which hopefully means no horrible bios bugs which i am sick fed up of.

I will likely end up running redhat for work reasons (event though its my machine) but will likely try and put gentoo on it once just to see how it flys with an i7, 12gigs ram and a couple of ssd's.

I installed debian on the M6400 without any major issues (I installed stable so wireless isnt working for the intel card, but it should work for debian testing).
It just takes a long time to wake up from sleeping mode.

I've got an M6500 on order also (in sig), so you'll see a post from me....I don't see any problems with Ubuntu based on my m4400 Precision (going to my son). My m4400 was quirky with other distros because of card recognition, but Ubuntu was great with it btw.

BTW, the m6500 is certified to run Red Hat Enterprise Linux if you want to pony up 89 bux or whatever.... :) It's supported on the Dell Site.

    Hello,

    I tried Ubuntu working perfectly.
    http://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?p=9069008#post9069008

I installed also Enterprise Linux 5 (Oracle ditrib),
working good also but need more manual
installation (I do not have all working yet ..)

I plan to install CentOs 5 in the next few days
and give you a feedback. Ubuntu is working fine
but for work I prefer CentOs fully compatible
wiht RHL5 and Entrerprise Linux Oracle

i tried backtrack 4 on the m6500 and have no luck with wifi, slackware 13 is a no go for me at this point too. BT4 is a modified ubuntu distro but it does not pick up either my wlan or ethernet. I find it surprising it doesnt find the ethernet, so it leaves me at a roadblock as far as updates and fixes. I am curious to see if the new ubuntu 10.04 works better out of the box with the intel 6300.
