When I run the Vista windows memory diagnostic tool it reports an error. If I run mem test from the boot menu of Ubuntu 12.04 I see a long series of errors highlighted in red. (can get a picture if needed)
Symptom - While in a recent install of Ubuntu 12.04 (fresh) my system totally hung- FF had 4 tabs open + I had a monitor tool for temps running (380 Mb ram was in use out of 2 GIG). The mouse moved but the keyboard was unresponsive, and the "short cut menu bar docked on the left was greyed out. I had to hold the power button to get out of it.
I am dual booting Vista with Ubuntu.
I have 12 GIG allocated to 12.04, (using about 3 Gig) the rest of the hard drive ~64 GIG is for Vista
I do not want to put any money into this ancient beast. Thanks for any input, Josea

Remove one stick of RAM at a time and retest, or the opposite, remove all RAM except for one stick at a time and retest.

Awesome Allur, you are a genius! I removed the easily accessed Hynix (1 GIG) Stick and voila - no more errors! +1 again to a man who has forgotten more that I will ever know about computers. I guess I will have to cancel my order for the new MAC Book with retina  :D
PS I appreciate the rapid response also.
