I am having issues trying to get the laptop mentioned to boot into the livecd in order to install. The boot process hangs and returns the following error to me:

    Code:
    [ 113.978568]
    [ 113.978569] HARDWARE ERROR
    [ 113.978570] CPU 0: Machine check exception: 4 Bank 4: b600000000070f0f
    [ 113.978825] TSC 35134dc47c ADDR 900000c2004001
[ 113.978076] This is not a software problem!
[ 113.979042] Run through mcelog --ascii to decode and contact your hardware vendor
[ 113.979130] Kernel panic - not syncing: Machine check
Any insight as to what is happening? This is a brand new laptop and I would hate to have to switch to another manufacturer if I can not get Ubuntu to load....

is your compaq automatically set to boot from the drive first, as mine is/always has been? what are you selecting/actions you're taking prior to seeing this message?

I have the cdrom, then the laptop hard drive as the boot order.

What am I selecting before that, every possible boot configuration there was. I think there is something in the hardware that is preventing me to boot. I tried the alternate install of both 8.04.1 and then 8.10 and both times successfully installed but when I go to boot into it it hangs and does not load...

I also got a problem with it, I can't formate it.. You know I don't got any CD's to it so it is a bot system when I start my computer. And I need to press "F11" to make a formate of my computer. When I press on it, nothing happens/respond and l can't formate it. What is the problem?

Yes unfortunately it is a 32 bit Vista!

I have found out though that someone else with a CQ60 was able to, or at least claimed to have loaded Jaunty on their laptop! It is in an Alpha now second release and I am waiting to hear how stable it is... My fingers are crossed...

Strange though that I can get Mandriva loaded no problem, just can't get Ubuntu... Something to do with debian maybe??

Also, your running Ubuntu 32bit? With a 64bit processor? Why not run 64bit? Sure there are some issues with plugins but for the most part those have been worked around! Piece of cake...

uhhmm im using a windows vista starter 32-bit with my ubuntu 8.10 32-bit. in my case, i used to have a cd of 8.04 64-bit but cant install it nor run using live cd. i tried to use a 32-bit 8.10 and poof, its working fine! in my thoughts, i think you cant mix up a 32-bit os with a 64-bit os

Google is your friend. That looks like a somewhat common error with flaky chipsets, especially the Nforce ones: http://kerneltrap.org/node/4993

There shouldn't be any problems with running 32 and 64bit OS's on the same machine. I have Windows XP and Ubuntu 8.10 64bit loaded on my personal laptop, and it boots into both just fine.

I downloaded Jaunty Jackalope and was able to this morning boot on to the livecd! Actually got to the desktop!! Even though it is an ALPHA 2nd release I am going to give it a shot. At least until 8.04.2 is released... Unless Jaunty does what I need without major crashes, then I will stick with Jaunty.

Pitabread, interesting reading! Definitely! But I wonder if there is just something with the isolinux loader with the prior versions since I was able to boot the 9.04 alpha this morning. Something with initializing the hardware drivers... But it could be as your posting states, the Nvidia Bridges causing the issues... I just wish I had more bios controls available with the laptop.

Alpha 3 and my laptop are running smoothly with a few work arounds for the video. Just need to get the rest re-installed now for my apps and I will be happy!

Just wish that the issue with bluetooth would be resolved. It is broken with 8.10 and looks like as far as alpha 3 goes of 9.04 it is still broken... Can not get the bluetooth mouse to work.... ARGH!

Compaq Presario CQ60-200 here. Bought it Fri. Jan 9. Bought a Linux magazine with Ubuntu DVD (don't remember the name/version, but this was "yesterday"). One side was 32 bit and the other 64 bit. Claimed to have 10 G of stuff. Popped the DVD in the tray, rebooted, pressed esc during the reboot, selected boot from CD, and it was off to the races. Everything except wireless fired up. The DVD worked on both sides, so the Celeron processor and everything else in the machine is 64 bit capable.

I loaded Debian on a USB stick on the following Sunday (1/11). Fiddled with /boot/grub/menu.list and device.map to flip flop hd0 and hd1. Pressed esc during bootup, boot from USB, and it was off to the races. Had to do some apt-get stuff to make the wireless work. That lasted for less than a week.

Circuit City has a going out of business sale. Saturday (1/17) bought a 250 Gb SATA notebook hard drive. Opened the case, yanked the Vistasux hard drive, inserted the blank hard drive, loaded Debian Lenny on the blank. Only had to spend a few hours total to get everything, and I mean everything, running smooth as glass. Put the Vista hard drive in the file cabinet. Sayonara M$ !
