So I need to close the X server to install the nvidia drivers installer but it doesn't seem to work.

In the terminal, if I enter init 3 it says I need to be root. So I enter sudo init 3 and nothing happens (it just change to the next line). If I enter like 99 as the number it says "illegal number" so it means it takes the command but nothing happens! I also tried with the CTRL-ALT-F1 console but it does the same thing.

    help?

    in terminal

    sudo /etc/init.d/gdm stop

    then install driver
if you can't type hit "ctrl + alt + f1"

    edit:
by the way, for your information, the latest nvida DESKTOP(not sure about mobile if there is any difference) driver will make your fan go 100% at all time = gasp omg
There is a work around using nvclock

Okay thanks I'm gonna try this later today

The drivers release note says "Added support for 8800GT, 8800GTS 512 and 8800M GTX" so I assume they are somewhat optimised for mobile

Okay, when I try to install it, it says the kernel compilation something is missing then it asks if I want to download from the nvidia server then it says it does not exist yet for my version.

The installer tells me to install an libc package for my kernel compilation. I'm really lost now

Have you looked at the Restricted devices manager?

Hmm yes but it was the 100.xx version. The one I downloaded is the 169.01

The restriced drivers give me the choice for 87,93 and 100 release

Okay no problem. My VM stopped working for whatever reasons. I installed XP home no problems but now when I open it it just hangs at "Starting VM: 0%"

Hmmm....using VirtualBox or VMware? Did you install through Synaptic as both are there?

Man, I put a desktop switcher in the stock Daryna panel, and have XP Pro running on one desktop full screen, and this on another. Linux has got it all over Windows!!!

    Virtual box.

I'm gonna try it back now. Can you enable the video card in it? In the description it says "Video RAM= 8mb"

Yes...I set my video ram to 64mb, and ram to 1024...I use a dynamic sized virtual disk so not to waste space I'm not using...and it runs fast. FYI

Hmm okay I found it. Can't set more than 128mb? That sucks. I got 512MB of DDR2 so I could have given it like 500MB.

The crash was caused by the audio driver I was using, fixed now

Yeah, I'm just running tax programs...once the screen is up, it doesn't matter I just field through numbers....yeah, that's right, 128 max....but does it share vid memory over what's given to it like ram?

I also can't set the resolution higher than 1024x768 and it gets pretty annoying, especially since the mouse speed still goes for the linux's desktop resolution
