Anyone know what i have to do to boot linux cds on a m1530? I tried all my fav distros but I couldn't booting any one of them. I tried using codes...noacpi blah blah blah and all that stuff, tried booting in safe mode. Any help would be appreciated. I tried sabayon, ubuntu, vector, ubuntu ultimate.

    1. use a bootable disc
    2. give CD/DVD higher priority than HD

Get the Ubuntu 7.10 DVD. Select the option boot with safe graphics. Then wait, it'll take a good 2-3 minutes too boot up perhaps longer. Eventually you may get a graphics not working message, which then allows you to boot with the graphics driver you need. Sometimes it skips this and goes right to the desktop. Just be patient.

Oh i get the screen that says:
    Busybox v1.1.3 debian 1:1.1.3-3ubuntu3 built-in shell ash
enter help for a list of built in commands
/bin/sh: can't access tty; job control turned off
    (initramfs)

I think its caused by the graphics card? But i get this message after using safe graphics mode as well.

all i did was type in noapci and break=top after pressing F6 and voila done. Oh the first time i tried i had to type in modprobe piix.

After this when restarting i had to build my grub with some basic commands. As well as xorg with the command: dpkg-reconfigure -phigh xserver-xorg another one i tried was dpkg-reconfigure xserver-xorg The first code worked. That was pretty much it, now i just have to set up wireless stuff with ndiswrapper since ubuntu does not recognize the intel 4965 card/does not work properly with it.

I think we have different hardware. I believe my graphics card is the source since xorg does not load automatically on mine. I have the 8600gt.

By the way any one seen the new compiz fusion plugins? They are pretty awesome with the fireflys and things like that moving around the cube.

I'm having the exact same problem. I have installed Linux on multiple different computers and been using it for about 7 years.

I got my new Dell XPS 1530 and I can't get Mint or Kubuntu to install.

The CD boots but and the initial CD menu comes up but then the problems start.

In Kubuntu the screen just goes black after I choose any of the menu options.

In Mint it starts to boot and shows the Mint boot screen and then starts throwing up all kinds of errors after errors.

    Any ideas?

What did you do to get it working?

    Thanks!

1-Have you tried to pass some options to the kernel?
2-Could you be more specific about the exact error message you get?

I've only had the Ubuntu DVDs work for me. You have to be patient, like I said sometimes it takes Ubuntu almost 5 minutes to go from menu choice to black to an image on the screen again.

I ended up getting Kubuntu to finally load. I never was able to get Mint to load.

The mint errors where something about Buffer Overflow if I remember correctly.

To get Kubuntu to load I choose F4 and picked a lower resolution with 16-bit colors. Then I chose to load it with safe graphics mode or whatever that was. After doing that it worked fine.

    Thanks!
