I started the reinstallation of Ubuntu 6.06 at the start of "The Daily Show", and finished downloading all updates and rebooting before the end of "The Colbert Report". Less than an hour for a complete installation including reformatting and all necessary updates.

    BEAT THAT, MICROSOFT!!!! :D

Now it's time to go searching for a Linux version of Nero. This old Dell boots much quicker than under XP, so I'm eager to find out how smoothly it operates and multi-tasks during heavy CPU usage.

Yup. You are right on. Plus, you got to see the Daily Show. :)

Keep plugging away for free software!

If you don't mind installing some of the KDE libraries, I find K3B to be one of the best burning applications I've ever used. I certainly prefer it over Nero.

I'm not certain if there's an equivalent for Gnome (which is Ubuntu's default); I'll leave that to someone who uses it.

Gnomebaker is not bad, not quite as good as K3B, but usable.

Indeed. I once spent two days trying to install XP, fix it, install SP2, fix what that messed up, update it, install drivers, only for it to again mess up.

I popped in the Ubuntu CD and had a full system going in an hour.

k3b actually doesn't pull in that many KDE libraries if I recall correctly. I have an xubuntu vmware machine here (no KDE on it at all), and it only wants to download a total of 90MB of libraries and such to install k3b. It's well worth it IMHO.

Comparatively, K3B completely dominates Gnomebaker. I wish there was a GNOME native equivalent to K3B that had all the GNOME look(s) to it...

I just wanted to add that Ubuntu placed a scroll function on the right side of my trackpad, and activated the 4-way pad below the trackpad. This hasn't functioned properly since I updated the trackpad driver shortly after I purchased the computer. Also, the display driver functions perfectly, at a resolution of 1400 x 1050. So far, K3B seems to be working properly. Thanks for the suggestion!

I believe you can get synaptics drivers for Ubuntu as well.

Heh... I'm looking at changing my FC6 machine over to Ubuntu. FC6 is just so ungodly slow.

And probably with way more software on the Ubuntu system :D

I've had similar experiences. Driver installation on windows is SO frustrating !!!
