My laptop runs #! Linux 9.04. I am looking for a couple of open source programs to help me with some projects.

I need something that functions sort of like Windows Movie Maker. It needs to support using still images and adding audio and text to the background. I only use some actual video footage but so far I have not discovered a program that can take handle stills.

Something to do large posters with. I am currently combining GIMP and OpenOffice Draw but it is not working the way I would like it to. I have yet to figure out how to use Inkscape which is also installed. Anybody know of a how to for that?

Thanks for any help. Linux/GNU has been serving me wonderfully up to now. Other than a few issues here and there (like failing to figure out how to get Firefox 3.6) I am so much happier than when I used Vista.

Thanks. Kino comes with my OS but no support for stills. I am going to try Avidemux. Cinelerra scares me a bit. Thanks for the guide.

Your computer has enough power, why not use Ubuntu? There's also OpenShot, Kdenlive, and lots of others. Wikipedia is your friend, and so is Google.

You could try Ubuntu Studio, I hear that is great for the sort of thing you are doing, or just find the add-on programs for it.

Hey good to see you again FarmersDaughter, glad to see you've stuck with Linux! :)

There's a bunch of good tutorials for Inkscape linked here under 'other inkscape resources':

Check out this guide for stills in Kino:

You could also make a few images into vids with command line tools, join them, and put audio on top of it with either kino or avidemux or something else.

I agree with Calvin. Openshot or PiTiVi, if you're using Gnome, Kdenlive, if you're using KDE. Avidemux is more of a Virtualdub like application for Linux, (video toolbox), and Cinelerra is definitely a pro type tool with a large learning curve.

    Good Luck..

Thanks. Ubuntu and my laptop don't like each other. I tried it. :) I will look at all those guides.
