    Laptop: Acer TravelMate 2480

I've installed RHEL4 twice and CentOS 4.4 once on this new machine and both show the exact same error when booting up from a fresh installation:

And then it just stays on that screen forever and wont continue.

Is this a hardware problem? I tried RHEL5 and it was able to get into linux. But it had several package limitations so I decided to go back to v4.

It's probably a hardware incompatibility problem. It probably sends a signal or doesn't respond to one that RHEL4 doesn't understand, but RHEL5 does. Unfortunately, I don't know the machine, so I'd hate to hazard a guess. It could be something to do with ACPI, so you could add the noacpi option to your boot command.

Is there a particular reason you want to run Cent-OS? It's generally aimed towards a server market... If you are set on running something similar to RHEL, try out Fedora Core.

I recall getting a similar error way back with FC3 but its been so long that I don't remember the fix. :(

But ditto on using Fedora Core over CentOS or RHEL4 -- you'll end up with better (or at least more current) drivers and features than any RHEL based os but still very similar to it.
