Hi all :hi2:
I have acquired an old Acer Aspire 2010 with 512mb of ram, 60gb hard drive.
I have tried installing Mint 13 & 14, Ubuntu 12.04 & 12.10 all failed to install files or machine did not support PAE kernal
Slitaz 4 just screwed up the boot manager
Is there a current distro suitable for this laptop?
I would appreciate any info

Have a look at Antix Linux based on Debian Testing & designed to run on 128 meg of RAM or more. The Antix Forum is friendly if you have any problems. For a more advanced installation than is possible with the MEPIS Installer I have a script here.

my vote would be for crunchbang or peppermint.

For Ubuntu releases prior to 12.10, you can get around the PAE default by installing using the minimal ISO and selecting 'generic kernel' when it asks. After 12.10, which mint 14 is based on, there are no non-PAE kernels offered in the installers or even from the repositories.
You can try LMDE instead of Ubuntu-based Mint, it comes with a 486 kernel by default. Or if you really want Ubuntu or Mint based on Ubuntu, you can use a custom kernel that you install manually before you reboot the installer. -
Thank you all for your valuable info
As I need Dropbox and the Chrome browser, I feel the LMDE option is best suited - Would this be the Mint 14 version or Ubuntu version ? -
also dropbox and chrome are easily installed on any version of linux.
