I have this one older PC I use as a kind of experimental machine. I've got this two LCDs hooked up to it (x700 Pro) and they're in portrait mode. I would love to get ubuntu (jaunty) up and running on this thing, and I've tried. It runs perfectly the problem is...it doesn't mind multiple displays, and it doesn't mind rotating the screens (if they are clones or just one is hooked up), but it refuses to do both. It would probably help if I could get the ATI drivers installed but I've never been able to do that (I've been trying since 7.04 on every version with all kinds of drivers, dozens of times) without destroying the entire installation (I've recovered from screwing with ubuntu before, but whatever these drivers do...it just never works afterward). This is my white whale boys...my white whale.

Nope, well...yes..when they are cloned. But if they aren't...no go. Tells me to log out and log back in (restart x server, in other words...right?), and when I do, either one of the monitors is disabled, or they go back to being cloned (but it is rotated).

Your judgment is being clouded by your obsession with Herman Melville. On top of that, there are probably zombies in your computer that you've overlooked.

J/K Wish I could help but I have no idea. Have you ever fired up Fedora for comparison?

Hah, zombies that I overlooked pfft....OH GOD BRB *gunshots*

....*ahem* so...yeah, haven't tried fedora or any other distro yet though. Fedora always left a bad taste in my mouth, but that was years back. The problem is though I don't want another distro XD I want ubuntu. I should really install it again and give you guys some more concrete evidence of what's going on.

Edit: actually no I have tried some other distros, like xubuntu, kubuntu, a few others, but they were all debian based.

I know, if I could go back in time I would have bought an nvidia card hah, but I hadn't even learned the philosphy of linux back then so...
