    Problem
Overheating badly, via a liveCD test of a Linux Distro.

    Affected model:
    HP Business Class laptop
    (nx6325 RB526UT#ABA)
    Bios F.06 , 30 Jan 2007
    http://h18000.www1.hp.com/products/quickspecs/12447_na/12447_na.HTML
    http://www.notebookforums.com/thread176205.html
    AMD Sempron processor 3400+
    1.8 GHz, 256-KB L2 cache
    1 GB (667 MHz) DDR2 SDRAM (2 512mb DIMMs)
    Note: Max RAM maximum 4GB
    ATI Radeon Xpress 1150
    Pur date 10-2006

Need some ideas, from those that "know" Linux.
(I do not, last time I tried Linux was about 7?+/- years ago!)

While running a LiveCD of distro called Pclinux2007 (rev3) unit overheated badly.
    File name: livecd-TR3.iso

From the limited amount of research it appears that HP laptops ACPI does not play well with Linux?
(I plan on more than likely running Ubuntu- Or something that is friendly to "newbies")

Right now I have a XP PRO XP2 /Vista dual boot... Would like to make it a triple boot as well. Concerned on that as I've read the new Vista bootloader is differant than the XP one and how that would be affected with a Linux install.
(One issue I see on going to Linux besides the "learning curve" is about every six months a fresh install of Linux would have to be done- I'm not a fan of doing "upgrades" of OS's, I always do a fresh install.) Have set-up multiple boot OS's (various Windows 95/98/NT4.0/Xp/Linux) before, each on it's own native partition...using the XP bootloader on NTFS (even though the "offical" way to do that was to use a small DOS primary partition with the bootloader on it.

The plan is to migrate to Linux. On this unit XP PRO was installed first- then Vista. Unit is currently using the Vista bootloader.

    Getting back to the "overheating".

While I can understand a "LiveCd" not being configured right, is the "fix" to getting the ACPI/ fan to work correctly known at this time? I've read that you can turn the fan on so it runs ALL the time,(which I do not care for) and I've also read that when the unit goes into sleep mode, upon firing it back up the fan doesn't work right.(which is also a deal breaker) :(

Don't know a thing about Linux, seems the HP's have known issues with the cooling fan(s) not working correctly.

That is likely why HP will not honor warranties on laptops running Linux. :(

bc135, yes I read that little tidbit of info, I didn't read all the way thru the post on that issue but I would assume HP rep was giving the person a hassle over installing a non-supported version of Linux?, not the supported version.
(btw: When dealing with HP, you will get reps that don't know what they are talking about, so that might have been the case as well

Read thru the dv8000t keyboard thread that is linked to in my sig, and you will see a pattern at Hp on jerking people around, no matter what OS you run....
I've had to deal with them several times, each time the time spent made me want to pull my hair out, or set my arm on fire, so talking with them would be less of a issue)

Btw: on the dv8000t, plus others alot of people are having problems with the keyboards. (I think there is info on that, AND REBUILDING laptop keyboards in link in my sig)

    EDIT: Laura Breeden's problem http://enterprise.linux.com/article.pl?sid=07/03/23/1430204&from=rss
sounds like the keyboard itself is worn out, needs to be replaced OR rebuilt.

Her problem is she should have restored the orginal OS to the unit BEFORE she called them (if that OS was not pre-installed)... Restoring the OS is standard procedure that you have to do to confirm the "problem" is not caused by a software issue.

On voiding the warranty, Most mfg'a aren't going to be too happy with someone running a non-standard OS, or a installed OS that's been "hacked" to run faster- (Those hacks putting more strain on components sometimes).

Getting back to the "overheating" problem:

If using a non-supported version of a OS does cause the unit to overheat... I don't blame them for not honoring the warranty... That being said the BIOS is supposed to be compliant to some spec, and it is not in some way so they need to address that issue, honor the (hardware) warranty on a unit that say "overheated" because the bios was brain-dead (for a lack of better terms) if the OS being used was compliant., whatever the OS.

For what reason, I'm looking for a solution. If you have any thoughts on that, please feel free to add to the thread at any time.

    Gladiator,

Thanks for those links, that was more in line with the info I was hoping for. I was also hoping that someone with the same, or comparable unit would post that the "fixes" that are floating around indeed "work".

Had run across http://daniel.graziotin.net/2006/12/02/hp-nx6325-and-friends-thermal-problems-solved/ Was wondering if that is truely the fix, a temp fix, a bandaid, etc... last post saying it's a script, it not being a kernel fix.

PS: Not know the "terms" being talked about doesn't give me much insight to what is BS, and what is the real-deal so to speak...

Ok guys here's some info to add to the above, but like I said I'm lost in Linux, so that's why I started this thread.

Seems to me there are several issues:

    http://forums1.itrc.hp.com/service/...5245+1175105771233+28353475&prodTypeId=321957

Is the above the Fix?, if so how "well" does it work? any downsides?????

So.... if the above is the fix, How is this added to Ubuntu- Or something that is friendly to "newbies" install?

Details, and please expand on procedures that a person coming from a Windows environment might not understand.

usually appending acpi=off to the boot command in GRUB or at the "boot:" prompt for a LiveCD will make the fans run constantly. not ideal, but at least you won't overheat.

Thank you sir.. That's a good piece of info for someone running a LiveCD-
Question: Can this command be entered AFTER the LiveCd has booted?

I assuming that Linux has some built-in apps to monitor temps. What is the command to run a app? What monitors temps, shuts down the unit if temp goes too high, or give you a alarm of some type?

I don't believe so, there should be an option to pass custom kernel parameters at boot time.

The problem is, if you turn ACPI off, you lose the ability to monitor temperatures, since that's a function of the ACPI interface. The default program for temperatures is called lm-sensors.

    http://www.lm-sensors.org/ <project homepage
    http://packages.ubuntulinux.org/edgy/utils/lm-sensors <ubuntu edgy package listing.

I can't remember if it's installed by default, but if so, there is a GNOME panel applet for monitoring temperatures called "Hardware Sensors Monitor" which is included with the install. If you're using KDE, I'm not sure what you would use.

Well, pretty much every notebook manufacturer has a broken ACPI implementation, which is one reason why it's so hard for Linux to keep up. ACPI is a standard, which the Linux kernel has total support for. Unfortunately, manufacturers rarely follow all of the standard, and often don't specify what's broken so that developers can fix it.

Here, here. My old Compaq laptop that I run as my web server requires me to disable ACPI, because it's broken. Good times.

Standard that is modified, no listing of what they changed published... Great...

Wonder why XP doesn't seem to have these problems, Guess MS gets access to the info..

BTW: The "reason" I did a posting of models that might be affected, is two fold.

1: To bring to light just how many models of just that (1) mfg may be affected. It's one thing to say alot of models may be affected.... another thing to do a listing. (visual impact) HP should be ashamed of themselves. Pretty crappy if they are going to modify a "standard" that they don't provide the info in a timely manner.

2: For those models to be "listed" in case someone is doing a search using search terms such as the model number, Linux, overheating, overheat, running hot, burning, too hot, hot enough to cook eggs on, keyboard, LiveCd, boot off cd, boot off dvd, resume, sleep, fan, fans not running, etc.

the companies are also much more likely to release drivers for windows on their own. I'm sure it's part of the "chipset drivers" or whatever that the manufacturer includes with the unit.

Yeah, ACPI issues are the scourge of Linux -> Hardware interfacing. What i'd like to see is if Dell takes up Debian based Linux distros for their Inspiron platform (as they say they will) at least one brand will work well as far as the ACPI issues.

That being said, I haven't had too many issues with my Acer.

My Aspire 3000 series ran great with regards to ACPI. Then again, it was only an SiS chipset.

surprisingly, my ASUS has almost no issues with ACPI... the only things I had to configure were the media buttons on the one side so that they would control rhythmbox/totem properly.

hell, suspend and resume (and even hibernating, I think) work perfectly well!

My laptop would do the same without the nvidia drivers ;) I've had it suspend or hibernate and resume without the nvidia module loaded. With it loaded, you get display corruption that it doesn't recover very well from (as far as I can tell), but the rest of the machine is great.

    RE: No issues with ACPI

Sounds like you need to box that bad boy up, and ship it to HP/Dell, (or whoever) that is dropping the ball.. ;)
