    hey all,

new here, so just thought id tell u that i just ordered an s1, the higher end model, and am awaiting delivery. i was told approx 1-2 weeks, but as soon as i get it i will post a small review for you guys.

i only found out about the s1 because of dell screwing me around with a 9400, i had one of those on order with a 7800 for a measely price of AU$2700, with a $750 coupon. but after over a month of calling dell to find out where it was, they just kept telling me that they had a shortage in 7800's. from all this i ended up getting a 1GB memory stick, and a free carry case out of them, and then i cancelled my order to now purchase the s1.

    can't wait.

just wondering if anyone has seen a review posted for the s1 anywhere.

    thanks

S1 is too expensive so it is a no-go for me. have you considered P1 instead?

yeh well i had paid for a dell 9400, so considering the difference in price i think its alright. i looked at the p1, but they didnt come with the x1600, and i wanted at least a half decent graphics card in it, and the x1400 doesn't really count as a video card to me personally.

has anyone in australia got their hands onto a display s1 yet? i have been to so many shops and they all just say they are order in items.

I am considering order S1 as well. I think most of suppliers have stock now. S1 looks good, but not come with express card slot. Another thing is need to purchase the extend warranty. It will cost AU$295, not cheap.

Computer Alliance, its a company in Brisbane and thats where im located. So i know i can deal with them face to face, and not some person from malaysia (like dell)...

yeh i got the extended warranty, although i will probably never use it

    Hi All
I have ordered the LG S1 about a week and a half ago. I'm expecting to get it next week sometime....
I haven't found any real reviews on the European model which is faster, stronger and has a WSXGA screen (I'm a graphic designer...) it also comes with a 3 years warranty...
I live in Israel and the price is 12,990 NIS = 2,700 USD. abit pricey but all the laptops here are..
I really hope I'm going to like it :)

Actually if you write the tax off, the S1 costs in Israel the same as it does in the rest of the world.
Most laptops ARE overpriced here though...

I got my S1-P3B3A today. The quality looks good. But the video card x1600 need share with system memory. The default setting is share 512MB. I can't find where to change it. Also, it come with 2X512MB DDR2 667Mhz, not 1X1GB DDR2 667MHz. I only fond one slot for ram at the bottom. Anyone know where another slot for ram?

Very interested to know if the screen flexes as easily as the LM70. Most of the specs for the S1 look pretty tasty but I'm a little worried about the build quality. I had to send back two toshiba M70-FE5's because of dead pixels and was waiting to hear more about the LG's and the S1 or P1 in particular.

Wow, never knew that the lower model is similar to the P1-J2A8A. How much is the S1-J3A2A?

Edit: Bugger, its $2300+. Any chance of it going down to ~$2k?

    I think the S1-J3A2A should around A$2350 to A$2400.
    Here are the detail: Core DuoT2300 1.66GHz,15.4"WXGA,F/Bright, 512MB DD2,80GB, DVD S/M D/L,802.11abg,BTooth,XPP.
    The S1-P3B3A Should around A$3150 to A$3200. Here are the details: Core DuoT2500 2.06GHz,15.4"WXGA,F/Bright, 1024MB (2X512MB DDR2 667MHz not as LG's website said 1X1GB) DD2,100GB,S/M D/L,802.11abg,BTooth,XPP.

It come with MUI disc means you can convert the windows to any language you want. The bluetooth will support bluetooth headset and I have test for using VoIP software for making phone call.
The WXGA screen quality is good, fonts won't be too small and fine bright make screen looks more bright. I have compare with new Macbook Pro, screen quality better than that. Build quality is good as well, high quality paint make your S1 looks very different with other notebook. Only one disadvantage is no express card slot and no DVI port and Hard Disk speed only 5400rpm not 7200rpm. The 2M super pi test is 1min19sec. The 3D Mark05 I test is 4180.
Only one thing I want to know is it come 256MB ram with ATIX1600 or just share with system memory? I found the information on the video card is 512MB, not sure all share from system memory or just half of them. Anyone know it?

Its 2.5 inch SATA Hard Disk Drive. You need found SATA Hard Disk that has 7200rpm first. but i think not many of them. Also, I am not quite sure if you change the hard drive, the recover cd will work or not. I use other windows xp oem to install it and can't find the hard disk. You need use their origional cd to install windows xp. Otherwise, maybe you need found out he SATA driver during installation (Not sure work or not).

just heads up that you can only access 1 ram slot via under the notebook.

I gather the other is below the keyboard, i havent tried to get to it yet, so not 100% sure.

The P3B3A model (australia) comes with 2x 512mb as well, not 1x 1gb which is stated on a few websites.

also just to let ya know that the cover scratches really easy, ive only had mine just over a week and already has scratches.

also dont upgrade battery miser program to the latest version, i had a problem where it would not unthrottle my cpu above 1gig (6x multipler) no matter what settings or if i had ac connected. Versions which comes preinstalled with laptop works fine tho.

overall tho, really nice laptop, screen is nice, very fast, happy with my purchase, but i wouldnt give it as high a rating as above review, but still very nice :)

Also, there is an issue with Halflife 2 / counterstrike source where the game freezes at random and you have to reset. Looks like a common problem tho.

I found if I use IP Operator, the system will boot up very slow due to scan the wireless connection. I have uninstalled this software. I have no problem with battery miser program. I have one question, if new bios coming, how do we upgrade the bios? The other ram slot is under the keyboard, I have found it.

Nikkon, what's ur batterylife at what settings and tasks. If you were to rate ur laptop just like the reviewer, what would you rate it as?

wombat, once LG releases a new bios, you need to download it and flash your bios with the new one, using a program.. i think winflash or something like that...

    Thanks,

I'm having the same problem with my P1. It seems to be a sound issue. I tried reducing the sound quality to medium but there is no difference. Does anyone have a work-around?

Also, I'm kind of ticked at LG for how slow their driver updates are. The LG Catalyst drivers are only 6.2, yet 6.4 has already been released. What's up with that?

    nah, i gave up :|

I found if you disable the bluetooth AV audio devices in device manager and then reduce the hardware support within direct x (go start > run > dxdiag) on the realtek sound device, that the freezes happen alot less. (every hour or so).

I bought a audigy pcmica card for it, but there is no option in BIOS to disable the onboard sound and im now getting blue screen of deaths which i rekon is a result of sound conflicts...

that or the audigy just doesnt work very well with the pcmica chipset...

If i disable the realtek sound card in device manager, battery miser doesnt run!

Just an update on the HL2 issue. I downloaded the latest Realtek driver, 1.35, from the Realtek website and it seems to have dealt with the problem. I suggest you guys give it a try too. Just more confirmation that the LG Intelligent Update isn't too intelligent or very up-to-date.

    Hi everyone,

I'm new to notebookreview, but I've been looking for a nice all-around lappy for some time already and like Mystic I'm kind of in a pickle...

    LG P1, Asus W3J, or Acer 8204?

I've read reviews here and at notebookforum.com which has lots of info on and Acer 8204, but less info on the Asus, and no info at all for the LG.

But since you guys have posted the reviews I am really getting interested in the LG. Mainly b/c it is lighter than the Acer and has a bigger screen than the Asus. Thus, I can play games, watch movies, surf the net, and do some photoshopping all without having to squint my eyes (Asus W3J) or lug around a heavy lappy (Acer 6.7lbs compared to LG 6.2lbs.)

And plus, I think that the WSXGA+ is too high of a resolution for me personally, b/c the pixels would make all the icons very small, and I heard that the Acer has a lot of LCD light bleeding and it seems to run quite hot (~68 celcius!)

So here's my question, how hot does the S1 (which is basically a P1) get after moderate use, and what tempertures does it hit after Intensive gaming? Does it every just restart b/c it gets too hot? I've heard the Acer 8204 is doing that from a few ppl on the other forums. Specific temperatures would be great and how long did you play the game for etc...

I would really appreciate the additional information. It seems that the LG has a lot of potential, just need to wait for all the drivers for this baby to get updated since it is still sooo new =) Oh yea, does anyone know how much it will cost to upgrade the batter to the 9-Cell, b/c I want to be able to get around 3.5-4 hrs of battery time....

    Thanks in advance,

    Travis

BTW, I will probably get the P1 sometime this summer, maybe in a month or so... If I get it I'll be happy to answer any of your questions and might even provide a review too. Also, I live in Canada, so Mystic the P1 version I plan on getting will be exactly the version you want too.

Your right, i installed the latest drivers of realtek website and it fixed HL/CS and also looks like it has fixed my blue screening problem!

I also installed omega ati drivers and had a huge performance increase in HL. totally recommend it to everyone.

And fixed my issues with cubase sx locking up (was vst problem), very happy with performance of s1 in cubase now! kills my p4 3.2 in performance in it :D
