To those who have an LG computer do you have any concerns about the sharpness and clairity of images on the screen, and in particular text? A couple of months ago I had use of a demo from the store and found that letters were not consistant in colour from top to bottom and had a fuzzy appearance. This put me off and I did not buy LG.

I back looking at the LG models because I can't find another product that is suitable, so for those who have LG units, I'd appreciate your comments on the screen and any other issues that may have arisen since you took delivery.

Since my initial look at LG, I see that there are new models so what are your thoughts about these and their features - ddr2 memory and the SATA hard drives versus the older models? Most of my work is wordprocessing, surfing the net and presentations so I wonder how much benefit I would receive from the new features in return for the higher price.

I can't comment on screen quality (yet), but are you sure the demo you looked at was running at its native resolution? I used to work as a sales rep for a larger electronics company selling notebooks and PCs, one of the customers' favourite pastimes was changing the resolution on the demo notebooks. They usually lowered the resolution, resulting in interpolation and wonderfully fuzzy displays.

I had use of the unit for a couple of days and changing the resolution did not change the quality of the image.

some days ago I have tested a LM50 in the store and noticed that someone changed the resolution to 1024*768 and it was realy fuzzy. changing it back to 1400*1050 maked it realy clear.

No issue on my LM50a. I concur with the previous posts, someone was buggering the video display. The new models look really nice also so I think you could not go wrong on either model.

I have migrated over the last year from

    LM50 -> LM50a -> LW70

0 issues with the screen..although all LCD have a little out of foucus issue if you dont use Native resolution...it has to do with how they display the information, if you reduce the resolution then the number of pixels displaying lets say an "a" changes.

There does however seem to be Sweet resolutions and poor resolutions..I see this specifically on the Lw70..playing games seems best at a resolution which is constant with the ratio of the native resolution, instead of a odd ration (w:h), also due to the differences "fine bright" and "clear bright" techs used across the range the images displayed seem to take on different quality's.

when we consider the sharpness of the screen, first of all the windows-desktop resolution must match the physical LCD resolution - as it was written here.

but there is also another hint:
when the sharpness of the text is not good, check the windows settings:

go to desktop, right-click -> properties -> appearance -> effects...
check the box (must be ON) for "use the following method to smooth edges of screen fonts" and select "Standard" instead of "Clear Type" (default value, good for hi-res CRT, not LCD).

for me it works nice. [ ;)]

Thanks for the input. I took the plunge a couple of weeks ago and purchased the LM50. So far no issues with the screen clarity and no big complaints with the unit.

March 10/05 I picked up my new LM50 notebook from my college bookstore. I hadn't had the chance to view this model prior to purchasing it, but I had seen an LS50 on display. I choose the LM50for its higher resolution display.

The following week I went back to the bookstore and told the clerk there that I was disappointed with the LCD. My main complaint was with the glimmering LCD display(or call it sparkling if you wish). The other real annoying feature was the extreme sensitivity of the viewing angle especially the vertical angle. Just sitting more upright while using the notebook and the whites would change to a greyish/silver wash. This was really noticable around the edges of the monitor.

I hadn't discovered this forum then. Boy do I wish I had!! Also, at that time I couldn't find a review of any LG notebook.

My bookstore clerk didn't think the LM50 display was anything unusual in a notebook and it took some convincing before he would agree to send it back to the distributor ALC Micro in Richmond British Columbia. Just as an aside, I had someone in our college tech support department look at the notebook and he agreed with me about the grey/silver hue that appeared when you moved your head slightly

Well the bottom line is I insisted on returning the notebook to the distributor and since that time I've been reading the postings in this forum about screen sharpness and brightness. I even found a review for a Dell Inspiron XPS2 that comes with an LG manufactured LCD. Here's a quote from that review:

"Here's where the XPS2 falls flat on its face. I have the LPL0000 LG manufactured LCD screen and I see sparkles on it everywhere! It's a very noticeable problem at this resolution....This is the same screen people have complained about on the 9200 and the 9300 Inspiron models. Dell needs to do something about this and do something quick. If you plan to use your computer a lot like I will be doing this will annoy you."

(Sure wish I'd read this before I chose the LM50.)

My LM50 went back to Richmond B.C. March 29/05. I'm still waiting for a new notebook to arrive here in Toronto... but that's a topic for lengthy posting on LG customer support later on.

I'm surprise...I saw the screen in person...And I though it looks great....

I have a SXGA+ on my Dell Inspiron 8100 don't know if it's Samsung or LG....I'm happy with it

    good luck with your screen....

    Good news!

I just received my replacement notebook from LG. It is an LW60 DBJU1 (WXGA 15.4" Glare 1280x800) to replace an LM50 CUWU1 (SXGA+ 15" 1400x1050).

The display on the LW60 is a HUGE improvement over the LM50. The screen is clear, bright with crisp contrast. Though it dims somewhat when running on battery a screen brightness setting of 7 in normal indoor lighting works just fine. On AC power maximum brightess is pure joy. The bothersome sparkle of the LM50 display is entirely absent on the LW. And the shading that played across the screen on the LM50 whenever I moved my head is barely noticeable on the LW60.

My favourite DVD plays the way I always hoped it would. The LM50 had problems with rapid motion (the car chase scene) but not the LW60. Maybe its due to the Radeon x600 or perhaps the SuperMulti DVD. Whatever, its beautiful to watch.
