Learning by doing occasionally is beyond frustrating. It just sucks. Case in point... I learned the hard way that ZIF drives have this itty bitty lever you must adjust to properly secure the ZIF cable in the drive. Duh.

I learned this AFTER I broke my HDD cable trying to bung the thing into the drive. LUCKILY I didn't break the damn SSD!!! Fortunately we have a C1 in the office that hadn't been deployed yet. I 'borrowed it' for 'evaluation' and promptly stole the drive cable out of it. :D Works like a CHAMP now... and the only wait is for a replacement cable ($19 from LG canada. I ordered extras just in case. I know I'll be changing drives a lot as SSDs come down in price.)

Anyway... the upshot is... it WORKS. The SSD isn't perfect and isn't rocket fast but resolves all the speed complaints I had. It now feels like a solid 5400 or 7200RPM drive in general usage and the A1 no longer feels even the slightest bit sluggish. And when you do large data loads (Lord Of The Rings Online anyone?) it's MUCH faster. Living in 32gb sucks though... it's been a while since I've really had to be lean on what I keep on the drive. For the time being I'll be travelling with a 200GB outboard USB drive. Fortunately they're very small and USB powered so it's not that big a deal.

So...does the T1 also have a ZIF 1.8" HD that can be replaced with a SSD? Which SSD did you buy?

Yes it does. The T1 uses the same HDD type as the C1 and A1.

I ordered the Sandisk off Dell's website. It's now on sale at $430 or so. It WAS $550 when I ordered it naturally.

2.5" housings are dirt cheap as are notebook drives so for under $200 you can have a big and portable HDD that is easy to carry along with the lappy. That's what I've been doing for iTunes and video storage.

If you can live with the speed for now, wait 6-9 months as 64gb SSDs will be out in volume by then and will be MUCH more livable.

Can you elaborate what lever to pull on zif connector to insert the ribbon?
I can't seem to find it on my new Sandisk SSD w/ ZIF.
