I am considering buying the LG P1-J001A9 (specs at the bottom of this post). I will be using it for school (3rd/4th year civil engineering student) which means mainly word processing, internet/e mail, excel, perhaps some very light AutoCAD (definetly no 3-D) or other engineering applications. Running engineering applications is not completely necessary since I do have access to desktops for this, but would be very convienent.

As far as I can tell this machine seems to meet my needs, but opinions on whether it is overpowered/underpowered for my needs would be nice. I was also considering the P1-5001A9, when asking around people seemed to really suggest a dedicated graphics card which this model is lacking. I settled on the P1 series because I really like the idea of a separate number pad as part of the keyboard.

Also, recommendations for other brand's notebooks with similar specs for price comparison purposes would be nice. (So far I have been quoted $2000 as the list price, but the person is negotiable). As far as I understand LGs tend to be a bit more expensive than others, but they have a fairly good repuation.

What is the battery life like for this machine? When I take it to school i will probably be using it for extended periods of time which means I will most likely just my A/C adaptor with me. How heavy/bulky is it?

All advice/opinions would be much appreciated

i believe that you could find either system cheaper from milestonepc (definitely not $2000!). as for your needs, if you don't game, a dedicated card isn't necessary, but may be nice to handle vista more easily. also, one thing to note about the one without the dedicated gpu is that the hard drive speed is going to be a bit slow, limiting performance.
