    Hi All ...

I have an LS50a about 2 years old. The machine has been subject to a lot of vibration, heavy handling over the years due to the nature of my job. I've suddenly "lost" my DVD and one of the USB ports. I think the problem is probably mechanical (dislodged ribbon perhaps) and, since I'm Waaay out of warrenty, I'm not afraid to open 'er up and 'ave a stickybeak.

Problem is .... how the heck do I open up this clamshell?

    Any drawings out there?

    Regards .... G'fer.

This is a little down the track I know, but I just opened one, and it was a real pain so I thought I'd leave some notes here (from memory so I might forget a step)...

    Heres some pointers:-

    - Remove all screws from the base (Don't miss the keyboard one)
    - Remove Battery, Remove 2 screws from under battery
    - Remove RAM hatch and remove RAM
    - Turn over and remove the keyboard (clips along the bottom). Lift carefully as to not damage the cable.
    - Remove screw under keyboard holding down top cover.
    - Remove screw holding CD drive in place - remove CD Drive
    - Here the trap - Now remove two screws from the upper CD compartment.
    - Open the flap on the other side (where the video & parallel ports are) and remove the two screws in the top left and top right corners.
    - Now remove the top of the black keyboard surround (where the power button is mounted), this takes some doing it is quite tight. Be careful when you lift it as there is a connecting cable, disconnect it before pulling the strip away.
    - This will reveal two screws holding the LCD screen supports, remove the screws and then remove the covers (Also takes some patience).
    - Disconnect the wireless and LCD screen connections and remove the screen.
    - Now if I haven't missed anything you can gently lift the top cover off at the same time disconnecting the touchpad cable and speaker cables.

That should do it. No warranty given, do this at your own risk.

    Regards,
    Bill.
