For those running Linux on their LG and wishing to get the internal modem working I found a driver package at http://www.smlink.com .

The README in the package explains the setup. The README also explains how to
use the driver in ALSA mode. I was not able to get the driver to work in
ALSA mode despite the fact that my kernel is built with ALSA support. Don't know
    why.

On my system without any other serial devices attached, the driver created the device /dev/ttySL0.

Interestingly enough, with this driver, the modem is connecting at a signal
rate greater than 50K on the same telephone line that my PC card modem was
only achieving 31K. And under WinXP the built-in modem was also only getting
31K. So the Linux driver is performing better than the Windows driver. :)

My unit is an LM40 for which lspci -v reports ...

On the question of the advantage(s), if any, of Linux over MicroSoft OS'es a good place to start is at http://www.linux.org/info/index.html .

For those wishing to try Linux, I recommend installing Linux alongside your other system to allow dual booting. You choose which one to boot when you power up. Again, http://www.linux.org for details.

Ubuntu.com will send you free linux CD's.. Ubuntu is a very friendly distrobution with a good installer, pretty much as easy (maybe even easier) to install as windows, and when you are done everything just works (tm)

They also give you a LiveCD which lets you toss the CD in the drive and reboot, straight into a linux desktop.. doesn't touch your HD at all, and doesnt require installation - but lets you get into it to play with and see if you like it.

They even pay the shipping cost :)
