I'm thinking of getting an LG S1-M002A9 as a desktop replacement (actually, in my case, a desktop-replacement replacement). My main concern is build quality. I want something that's built to last, and that looks and feels like a very high quality machine. So how does the S1 fair in this department? What sorts of materials is it made out of?

Please see the reviews already posted for in depth info. As for my personal experience with the S1, I bought mine in August and love it. Very solid and the piano black cover is really slick looking. I like the keyboard layout, particularly the fact that the number pad is included in the layout. The screen resolution is perfect for widescreen use, but fonts may be a little small for some tastes, although I like it.

3 years ago, I hand-built my desktop pc using a P4 3.0 with 2gig memory on an intel reference board with XP pro on a Raptor drive and the S1 appears to be as fast if not faster (really haven't sat down to do a side by side comparison). Great graphics as I do some minor online gaming (Pogo anyone?), digital photo management and of course web-surfing. I use Office 2003 and Outlook as my email client with no problem. I have Verizon FIOS using a D-Link wireless router and haven't had any problems with wireless connection or bandwidth usage when the wife is on the desktop simultaneously with me using the S1.

In the interest of full disclosure, as I have posted previously, the only bad thing I have to say about the system isn't hardware related, but the security software supplied by LG which allows use of the fingerprint scanner. The software version supplied (3.5) is buggy and in my case, would not work to allow a log-on as it should have, although the fingerprint scanner would work in other applications after the intial windows log-on. I understand the current version 4.0 is better, but I don't want to pay for the upgrade at this time. Hope this helps you make a decision.

    Here are the reviews:

    and:

You will definately find this laptop to be a suitable desktop replacement, i am currently making a new desktop that will match or come close to these specs because i was vey impressed by this laptop.

The materials is a high grade plastic with a glossy finish everywhere.
When you read the reviews, you will see all of the statements regarding how little the notebooks flexes and etc etc.

Cool, thanks for the responses, guys.

P.S. MilestonePC, do you have any more of these in stock for shipment within Canada? I might have to bust out my credit card tomorrow...

Also can't you just download the updates of the LG site????

Hey everyone. I was thinking where on earth (litteraly) can you get the best deal on a S1 with x1600 and core 2 duo (any speed)... I travel all over the world and trying to plan my next trip think I will plan it somewhere I can pick one up since it isn't sold in USA and don't say canada because milestone PC can ship from there but don't feel like doing that. Was thinking about going to South Korea...? Anyone know how the 555k model/HD dvd player models are? you can e-mail me if you want [email protected]
