    hey guys,

just letting people know, maybe i got a dud, but i think that the lg notebooks r crap...
granted they work great during the first period you get them but then they fall apart, ill run u thru wat happened to me (yes im disgruntled u would b too).

    - the notebook worked great for the first 8 months and as you know, notebooks not being the fastest things in the world started to slow down and seeing as i was doing some stuff that needed it to be at least performing decently fast i decided to reformat it, this is when the problems started happening.
    - i reformatted it and bleh everything turned out ok up till when i had to reinstall the drivers. so i was installing the drivers and stuff and the sound card didnt show up. so i ended up reformatting it 4 times in a row and it still didnt show up. i installed all the drivers via device manager to see if i had done anything wrong and everything was isntalled except for a mysterous device called a "Unknown PCI device"... wat the hell?! so i thought, screw it, ill just run it without sound. Then wierd things started happening...
    - does anyone know of the process that runs in memory called "svchost.exe". if u check tast manager its running about 8 times over. i asked my buddies what this was all about and they said it was normal they each run themselves over n over to control different aspects of the notebook. i wasnt overly worried. wierd thing was that one of the svchost's was running up 99% of the CPU usage... wierd... it stopped after a while so i thort no biggie just a glitch
    - i ran it for about 6 months without sound and it was annoying but not overly problematic.
    - recently i decided to reformat it again (getting slow again) and the same things occured:

    - i reformatted it about 9-10 times over the course of 3 days trying to figure out wat was wrong in every case the sound card didnt show up again... figures... but then every time i formatted it, svchost (that 99% one) showed up and slowed everything down to an absolute crawl.
    - so 1. i had no sound
    - second thing that happened, and this was wat brought me over the edge, was 2. svchost for some reason was interfering with all networking connections. these connections WLAN and LAN, worked fine until svchost decided to run amock again and then they would cutout and it was be impossble to get them working again without a restart
    - sometimes the laptop would work for periods of at maximum, 20mins, but they r rare and the intervals at which svchost is stuffing stuff up is getting smaller. it almost constant now.
    - So i tried to end process. guess wat. when i end process it stops all networking devices working, stopped the minute amount of sound coming out of it (ya sound worked sometimes, only the alerts and stuff, not startup sound or media sound) and at times the usb ports dont work.
    - i've tried to contact LG and even the random stores (and i mean random, any store that sells computers) to see if i can get any info about this problem whether theres a solution and has it happened to other people.
    - i;ve seen one other discussion on it on the web at cd-freaks but it didnt seem as severe as they problems i'm having.

i know its a long post but can anyone help me? find a solution or point me to somewhere where i can get some hints.

im seriously at my wits end and as about to throw the notebook from the balcony this afternoon

    thanks

    ciao

Seems like a software problem, svchost is a Windows XP service that is always needed.

Are you sure ALL the drivers are up to date?

dead sure, ok well mostly dead

i installed the standard drivers that came with the LG intelligent update cd (its like a fancy recovery disk) manually isntalled those that didnt install, then ran update checker to get the latest drivers.

that was wat i was told to do first... still happening... in fact its happening right now....

i actually set up this 10 year old pc (im on atm go the celeron 900!) to get on the net because it was more reliable than the lg laptop

i've got all drivers installed now (yes EVEN the sound card), but svchost.exe is still taking up 99% of cpu usage.

i've been watching it on task manager for the last 30 mins. it seems to slowly (really slowly) increase memory usage as well its up to 40mb now

How about trying a new copy of WindowsXP. You never know the one that you've been using to install might be a bad copy maybe?

PS: But hey if you are serious about throwing it out. I would happily take it :) just PM me

You are missing some driver or other. And yeah, killing svchost processes is a baaad idea. They host all the services running under Windows (among others, your wifi connection, usb ports and sound, quite probably)
And if it's using 99% CPU, it sounds like it's trying to do something it can't (such as talking to the sound card), most likely because of that missing driver.

Unknown pci device just means that Windows can't find a proper driver for the device. You can try noting down the device ID and typing it into google. Alternatively, run through the laptop specs sheet, and google for drivers for each part.

But this isn't really a problem with your laptop. At most, it's a problem with the recovery cd not including all the required drivers and patches. (You have patched windows too, right?)

that sux the recovery cd doesnt have vrything in it, its jipped.

also, all drivers r now installed, soundcard is recognised.... but,....

SVCHOST IS STILL RUNNING at 99% USAGE!!!

sounds like a software problem to me as well, do you have partitions? Check for viruses and spyware, if you only formatted your windows partition.

    Anyways good luck.

According to my own research on my task manager files, a virus can hide itself in an svchost file and be responsible for this sort of problem.

I suppose it is possible that there's a hardware defect that causes some service to run at 99% (probably related to wifi, since you say that no longer works)

But you got the sound card issue solved?

like someone else already mentioned, viruses can work behind the guise of svchost. i would check every background process to see if there are any weird looking programs. i would also check out what programs are in your startup by using regedit.

Sound card works yes, but wifi cuts in and out connects and disconnects itself every 15-30 secs. but i think both r linked, when i end svchost both wifi, networking and sound stops working, so i assume this particular instance of svchost controls those aspects of my laptop.

i dont know how a virus could enter my laptop before i've even been able to connect to the internet (using the desktop atm) but ill run it thru a system scan to check.

    ...

its at 97% checked and nothing has turned up yet apart from some "adware" which turned out to be LG updating thingys

ill keep trying ty for the help guys

Well, each instance of svchost is really a "service host". It doesn't run one service, it runs half a dozen. So that particular svchost might just by coincidence be hosting both sound and wifi services, but only one of them is malfunctioning, and they're still executed in isolation.

Yeah, I doubt it's a virus, when it happens again after you reformat, and if you're not online. Still, never know. ;)

The first step is to narrow down which service is causing the problem. Svchost runs multiple instances to divide services into multiple groups.

You can find info on which services belong to which PID (process ID), then narrow it down by selectively disabling things until the system works.

instruction on this and more info here: http://support.microsoft.com/?kbid=314056
