    hello from germany!

first of all congratulations for the great site and forum. it has become my number one notebook information resource on the internet. great reviews and good help from the forum members.

I'm searching for a preferably thin and light 17" widescreen notebook and so it's no wonder that i'm very interested in the LG LW70 as it seems the most portable notebook in this screen size (maybe Samsung m40 but it lacks from gpu performance or powerbook which is a bit too expensive....any other suggestions??)

unfortunately there is no LG reseller in my neighborhood so i cannot take a look at the LW70 and i have to post my questions to the LW70 owners here:

in the review of the LW70 was said that the notebook is cool and quiet but in the review of the LM70 the reviewer posted just the opposite. so I'm a bit scared because this is very important for me. --> ist the LW70 really cool and quiet? even under heavy load?
and second question: does anybody have the 9 cell battery? does it fit like the 6 cell or does ist stand out?

    thx

I have an LW70 and to answer your questions regarding heat & noise is not easy - I used to have a HP P4 17" laptop and compared to that the LW70 is very quiet and cool but I have to admit that after prolonged use playing games or other heavy duty stuff it does quite quite hot and noisy - not as bad as the P4 was when it was just idling (I swear that HP P4 was like a hovercraft - it had to be tied down! :)) but nevertheless it does get pretty hot & noisy compared to when you are just using it to surf the Internet etc - under these 'normal' conditions it is very quiet and the heat is not too bad - it is possible to sit it on your lap for 2 hrs or more at a time, but I wouldn't want it on my lap after an hour or two of Halflife 2 or similar...

I haven't seen the 9 cell battery in person but my understanding is that it does protrude a little from the base of the laptop - this could be a good thing - help with heat dissipation and also typing angle?

i have a LW70 which is very quiet. the heating has a little trouble but a coolin gpad soon fixed it where as i had the trouble of finding a good cooling pad that was quiet aswell.
The power of the LW70 is amazing and also teh abttery life. It is the only notbook i have and have ever used so i can not compare.

    thanks for your answers!
    @angryofmayfair: i can imagine the P4 hoovercraft :)
while I am at home I sometimes let the notebook on the whole night and sleeping in the same room (I am a student, so i unfortunately I don't have a villa with many rooms... :)) becomes a bit difficult with a hair dryer running...
but if you say that the LW70 is quiet under normal circumstances this sounds good for me. probably it's very difficult to build a thin notebook with such cpu/gpu power and hold it cool and quiet. even powerbooks get really hot after a while... ASUS notebooks seems to have even bigger heat problems and VAIOs 17" are of huge size compared with the LW70...or does anybody know an alternative to the LW70?
@AlexC: which gpad did you buy?

    thx

I think you will find the LW70 is right up there amongst the best as far as low heat & noise under most operating conditions. Mine spends most of it's time in the bedroom and it often plays us to sleep via iTunes and an Airport Express connected to the stereo - the fan noise is not a problem at all, in fact it's pretty much inaudible when used normally, only when I have pushed it hard with games did it become noticable.
The screen is also very high quality - I would say it's a s good as the Sony & Toshiba w/s models and way better than most of the others.
I don't think you would be disappointed

Hi - I noticed that you really like the battery power on your LW70 - can you tell me how long you can run your battery for?? Is your battery a six or nine V?

I have a LW70-J3KA and it is a fantastic notebook. Quite a powerful thing as well. It is very quiet however, it does tend to run fairly hot under constant load. That was soon fixed though by sitting it on a thin sheet of aluminium (great heat spreader/sink).

Within the next month or two I plan on adding a 7200rpm drive to it as well as another 512MB Ram - then it will be a beasty thing!
