    Hey all,

I've been reading some discouraging posts about no BIOS updates for the LG S1, and no one actually trying 4 gigs of ram on it. Some specs say it should, some say it won't.

Well I tried 2x2GB Kingston HyperX sticks, and it don't work. First, during post, the BIOS only counts just over 3.3 gigs. I understand that windows can only use about 3.2 gigs, but the BIOS should still count the full 4, right??

In any case... WinXP proceeds to boot, but right when it switches resolution to the login screen, and goes blank. It seems to hang, but keyboard seems functional, caps lock and num lock work, harddrive's working away loading windows, but all output to the display ports is dark.

Ok, maybe windows is screwed. I try booting the latest Ubuntu CD distro. Goes through the loading screen, everything seems fine, then it tries switching resolution and the screen goes blank again!!

My best guess is there's a bug in the BIOS video memory addressing with 4 gigs of RAM. I tested 3gigs with 2gig and 1gig sticks, and everything works fine.

I contacted LG, and the dude said there's an update for the S1 that has to be mailed (??). Weird... still waiting for it after more than 2 weeks.. has anyone had any similar experiences (with success??)? Will update if/when I receive the fabled S1 bios update.

    Cheers

Many members on this forum (as well other forums) came to a conclusion that win XP 32bit can't read more than ~ 3.2G of Ram, and some member in this forum discussed that LG laptops (at least S1) many have some issues with Kingston Rams and many not work well …

Progress!! Quick answer, yes, there is a BIOS upgrade for the S1 (specifically M002A9) that fixed the original problem I had. I just received it yesterday, flashed my BIOS, and it counts up to 3200 megs. Winxp boots, and everything's fine, except only 3200 are visible to any OS (64-bit or not).

Longer answer, the new BIOS version is Phoenix Technologies RKYWSF33 09/19/2007. I don't remember the details of the old one, but the date was 2006.

It took almost 2 months until I received a very sketchy-looking envelope, hand-addressed with return address as "LG" only. The disc was a standard Maxell CDR, hand-labeled "LG Notebook BIOS Update" in green felt, and a very simple step-by-step instruction sheet that required me to enter the model and serial numbers before flashing the BIOS. Oh, I also had to give the serial number and full address to the LG Customer support dude.

This whole thing seemed very sketchy, but the upgrade went smooth, and now it works! I have no idea why they snail-mail the BIOS updates.. I think they prefer people to bring their laptops to the shop for the upgrade, or they're still testing the upgrade?? Dunno..

    Congrats on the upgrade

Is it possible to make a copy of the disc and post a download link?

The compressed ISO size is 50 megs, I don't have anywhere to host it. Can I upload it to this forum somewhere? Do you think I'll get in trouble with LG? I wonder why they don't just post the BIOS update online.

ohh that's a big file, i thought bios file size is MUCH less than this...

I don’t want you to get in trouble with anyone but I do believe that we are eligible for any update for our LG laptop…
you didn't pay for it did you?

No I didn't pay, I called LG customer support and they sent it to me.

It's a Bootable ISO, and it seems to have BIOS updates and tools for all LG laptops. I wouldn't want to try and extract just the relevant files, since I'm not familiar with their upgrade process and tools.

I'll gladly upload the file somewhere, if someone provides the webspace.
