Hi all, first post here. Had a look around but could not find anything on this. Does anyone know whose DL Burner is incorporated into the LW70 model. I'm sure it's some rebadged model. Reason, being, my burns are extremeley slow 2X, and for that matter the read is also very slow. Has anyone else had this problem, and if so, how did you fix it.

    Thanks
    Cage

Is it the same as the one in the LG LW60? All it says in the hardware device manager is HL-DT-ST DVDRAM-GSA 4080N. I heard somewhere that it was an LG burner. Don't know how true this rumour is though.

Anyone know what the actual burn speeds (ie. 4x, 8x) the DVD burner in the LG LW series are?

Oh and on another subject: Is it best to take the battery out if you're using the AC to power the laptop?

    THanks all

According to Nero, mine states it is a HL-DT-ST DVDRAM GSA-4080N with a firmware revision of OK03. I have sent an email off to LG, but as of yet they have not botherted replying. There seems to be a reference to this number on other sites, but stating it is a NEC (OEM Version). I would like to try a firmware flash to update and perhaps get some additional speed out of this baby.

    Any help WOULD be appreciated.

Yes I have questions about the burner in my LW70 too - the best I can get out of it is 4x but I sort of put that down to the crummy TDK 8x that I am trying to use, even so the burner in my desktop PC burns them at 8x at least it trys to, the LW70 won't even try it just sits on 4x even though Nero says it's burning at 8x....
Also it is NOT a dual layer burner in my LW70 but that's no big deal and no surprise as I don't think my version was advertised as being DL but I'm not sure - there's no specs on the DVD burner on the Australian web site other than 'dvd super-multi' AFAIK....

    Anybody????

geez...that's a bit dodge isn't it? yeah...scared of those vague info sites. Will ask HN when I go back there to get my extra 512 DDR2 RAM, although I'm sure they'll say they're not sure and would have to call the manufacturer and then stand there not doing anything :p because i'm pretty sure i asked for a dual layer burner.

howd you find out it wasn't angry? you test it with some DL media?

I was never actually sure at what speed the burner was anyway...did it actually ever say it was 8x?

EDIT: well i found this link and i think it seems like the same dvd drive..doesn't mention anything about DL though. :(

Bit crappy, sorta wanted a dual layer just in case i ever needed the storage, and they did say it was.

    Will see what happens.

Nice find - yes that looks like the drive in my LW70 but then like reported here, I also have seen info somewhere that says it's not an LG drive which seems crazy seeing as LG make a LOT of optical drives you would think they would fit their own drive to their laptops...

    Confused..... [ :(]

As for dual layer capability - yes I guess it would be nice but it's no big deal - I can't see d/l discs ever getting anywhere near the same price as two blank single layers and anyway it's only a stop-gap thing until blu-ray or other HD media become normal.
So I am not that bothered about dual layer but I would really like to be able to burn at 8x if the drive and the media are supposed to...
Yes I tried a dual layer disc in my LW70 and Nero still only gave me a 4.7GB limit, whereas the same disc in my desktop PC using a dl burner and Nero gives me an 8.5GB limit.

well it turns out my one is not a dual layer burner either. I think it depends on which package you get since they have a few different version "packages" of each model. mine being the lw60-dbja.

When i went back to get my ram memory, i asked the salesperson and they were sure it was, but since they didn't have any DL media in stock...i couldn't really test it at the time. But when i finally got some later on...nope...not dual layer...bugger. even though it is still quite exie.

I just talked to LG's sales rep and I was told that the LM70 definitely has a dual-layer DVD burner... He said that LG makes the only DVD burner that can burn all formats (including DL, DVD-RAM). When I asked him why DL is not on LG's website he said it was a misprint... Well, don't really know what to believe...

    What do you guys think?

Hi all---again. I wrote this sometime back. Has anyone with the burner in the LW70 had any formware updates for it. I can find one which is for an NEC, not sure if I have an NEC or not.

Nero displays it as a HL-DT-ST DVDRAM GSA-4080N with firmware upgrade OK03. Does anyone have the same burner and or firmware revision that they have upgraded. As I bought mine in Melbourne (Australia) it could be a different model to others around. It seems to be a popular laptop here though. I'm more than pleased with it.

    "GSA-4080N" is the key...

It should have the specs of:
    Write Speed (DVD+R) : 2.4x, 4x ZCLV, 8x ZCLV
    Write Speed (DVD-R) : 2xCLV, 4x ZCLV, 8x ZCLV
    Write Speed (DVD+RW) : 2.4x, 4x ZCLV
    Write Speed (DVD-RW) : 1xCLV, 2xCLV, 4xZCLV
    Write Speed (CD-R) : 10x,16xZCLV, 24x ZCLV
    Write Speed (CD-RW) : 4x, 10x, 16x ZCLV
(High Speed: 10x, Ultra Speed: 16x)
    Read Speed (CD-R/RW/ROM) : 24x / 24x / 24x max
    Read Speed (DVD-R/RW/ROM) : 8x / 6x / 8x max
    Write Method(DVD+R/+RW) : 8x / 6xmax
    Write Method(DVD-RAM(Ver.1.0/2.1)) : 3x / 2x
    Data Transfer Rate(CD) : Max 3,600KB/s, DVD: Max 11.08 Mbytes/s

Doesnt look like there are any firmware updates for it.

LG seem to be horrible for after sales software support :(

Already have looked in Nero Info tool, that is where I got the information. I was just wanting to know if someone had tried some other type of firmware with this model and if it worked. i have looked all over the place and cannot find anything later than OKO3 version. Having said that, it might be that it is the latest, just don't know. I did send an email to LG ,b ut wel all know how that goes ------ SILENC (NO REPLY). As yu said, great after sales service. I really like the machine, but have to say, I do not think I will buy another as the follow up stinks.

Hrm, i havnt burnt anything in mine yet... might give it a try now.
Remeber burn speed does depend on the media type as well, they cant always go at full speed.

    [edit]
Just burnt a DVD ISO at 4x, no problems.

Hey aegis HN told me my LW60 with the same DSA-4080N burner was a dual layer as well. I havent tried it yet but I wont be happy!

I'm not impressed with the who LW60 computer to be honest and wouldnt mind taking it back and telling them where to put it.

I have been getting some very strange rip/burn speeds happening. For example it has taken me about 50 min's to copy a DVD on a burner that SHOULD be 8 times. Seems actually dropping it onto the hard drive is taking the longest. I'm getting transfer speeds of up to around 4800kb/s towards the end but at the start its down around 2000kb/s. Can anyone tell me if thats normal? Thats a very good copy actually as I have had bad onces with it sitting on about 750kb/s when it takes forever to copy!

Also during the actual burn it says it is running at 8 times but its still taking me 15 minutes to burn the DVD. Those numbers just dont add up. It apears to run a lot faster near the end of the burn than the start.

Can anyone PLEASE help with this as I'm lost!!!
