I need some advice from the notebook community regarding the quality and efficacy of the latest line of notebooks from LG.

For the purposes of making a purchase, I am comparing two LG laptops that are almost the same in everyway, except in terms of screens. There is a price difference of approximately $450.00 (CDN) between the two for a different screen (details below), more RAM (1GB), and a slightly better processor.

First, I need some guidance on notebook screens. I have read through some of the other threads on this website and other websites and am still not clear as to which is a superior screen for the long haul. The details are as follows: 15.4" WSGA+ (1600 x. 1050) or 15.4" WXGA (1280 x. 800) Fine Bright Technology. What I am trying to determine is which has the better screen? Most of my planned work for the computer is business oriented, along with wanting the ability to undertake some multimedia and gaming applications. Obviously, the computer will be used for entertainment purposes as well, watching DVDs and listening to tunes. The two models in question are: LG S1-M0002A9 and LG S1-P402A9. The former is the one with a WSGA+ (1680 x.1050) matte screen and the latter is with the WXGA (1280 x. 800) gloss (fine bright technology).

Another question arises about the video card. I have talked to several people who are supposed to have close knowledge of LG computers, including LG Electronics Canada, and nobody is quite sure of the baseline for memory of the video card. Is it 128 MB or 256 MB? I know it can be clocked to handle up to 512 MB, and from that it’s clear that the card is one of variable memory; but what is the least amount of memory the card is designed for? Even the ATI website is unclear in this regard. Does anybody know? Is there anybody out there? By the way, don’t try to ask LG Canada about their products, if you are lucky enough to speak with somebody, they will just quickly refer you back to their website. As you know, the internet is omnipotent and is the elixir for all questions and concerns.

Thanks so much for reading and considering my thread. I would appreciate responses as soon as possible so as to facilitate making a decision in the very near future. Thank you.

Your mention of their lack of knowledge should be a warning to all of us about what their service would look like after you have commited your hard earned $$$.
I browsed their website for the information, dowloaded the owners manual and browsed it, still that information is not given.

Has you probably know, Hypermemory feature uses your notebook memory (Shared) for the video card.

So if the card as 256 MB, it will use up to 256MB from your system memory to give you that maximum figure of 512MB.

You mention some gaming, the LG is based on older ATI video card and you might be better to look at a notebook offering the GoForce 7700 which is a more recent offering (Asus G1?).

While the Asus G1 has a limited availability at the present time, they should be more avaialble in the upcoming weeks.

Best regards and happy Notebook shopping.
