I've got an LG LW60 laptop...and I just noticed that on the bottom of the laptop, just under where the battery lock latch is there's a thinnish rectangular cover of some kind, just next to it. It's got a funny symbol next to it also.

Anyone know what this thing is? I don't want to go pulling it off willy-nilly (I promise not to use that phrase again).

    Cheers,
    Yours stupidly

If you pull off the rubber cover you will find a multipin port to attach a port replicator.
I don't have a direct link to this but if you go to the LG Canada site/LW70 and download the PDF brochure there's a very small low res pic of one there.
From what I have heard it has DVI/VGA outlet plus Toslink audio - perfect for connecting the LW60/70 to a home theatre plasma & sourround sound receiver.

Don't think it's available in Australia as yet - ask Harvey Norman.

Oh on another note...do you know whether it is best to take the battery out if you're powering the laptop via AC or is it fine to leave the battery in? or is it best to take it out like they do when the laptops are on display in the stores?

I just don't want to mess up the life of the battery by uneccessary charging and discharging and battery memory issues.

    Cheers

I would leave it in there. I would try to use less battery as possbible...meaning whenever you can plug it ...plug it....
as for the stores...they don't want people to steal the battery..

Agreed - no need to remove the battery - today's lithium cells (with the right charger) are immune to overcharging and memory effect - the battery is designed to be left in the laptop full-time, mains power or not.
Aegis pls let me know if you have any luck finding the 9 cell battery in Australia.

    Cheers

Hmm, well I was sort of expecting it to be around the $200 mark - it's the same price as most of the other manufacturers...
That's for the LM model - I wonder if it fits our LW's.....?

BTW I upgraded my HDD from the 4200rpm 60Gb to a Seagate 5400rpm 100GB one a few weeks ago - very very pleased with the noticeable performance improvement - no extra noise/heat and the battery life seems unchanged.

Damn you mayfair, I'd like to do that too :p But after seeing the price for one of those badboys...might have to leave it for a while.

How much did you get your seagate 5400rpm 100gb drive for?
Are they those new momentus drives?

Also...do you ever have the problem of when you leave your laptop (on both ac and battery i think) that the screen will turn off (hibernate or whatever) but when you try to "wake" it up...the only way to do this is to hold down the power button to turn it right off again and then restart?

I know this is in another thread, but since I have mayfair's attention here :p

And in answering niwde's question, I've usually got the laptop plugged up, so I don't really stress about the battery life. I believe with the right moderate powermiser battery setting, you could get a good time out of it...say around 2-2.5 hrs out of it.

Other then that (and the 4200rpm drive and only 64mb x600 vid card), I still quite like the lw lg60.

Its quite quiet by my standards. After prolonged use, you do start to feel the keyboard heat up a little, but nothing annoying. I believe all laptops would be quite similar.

the other thing is its remote for dvd/music use. great little thing.

oh and the screen...luckily for me...no dead pixels.
widescreen and glossy. I lub it. Not sure if it's quite on par with toshiba's and sony (since I haven't seen them side by side) but still quite nice.

If anything goes wrong, I'll be sure to let you guys know by ranting on here :p

    Cheers

Aegis yes the bloody things are a bit pricy right now - I managed to get mine for $289 - yes it's the momentus I think it's the only 5400 100GB avalibale at the moment.

Probably should have waited 6 mths - by then the 7200 ones will be that price and the 5400 ones will be down to less than $200... :-(

Not had any problems coming out of hibernation or standby at all - is it perhaps trying to wake up but the battery does not have any capacity or does it do this after a fresh charge?

I think you should be getting a bit more than 2.5hrs out of the battery, on my LW70 with the battery miser set to default for most things (screen set a notch down to 3 instead of 4) I get over 3hrs easy, closer to 4hrs and that's with the wi-fi on streaming iToons to an Airport Express wireless point and general surfing the WWW via wi-fi too.....
I do think though that the battery miser settings would play a big part in battery life - I know if I max out the display brightness (have to wear sunnys for this! :) ) then the battery life would drop by quite a lot....

    Shewring - sorry I didn't respond...
The HDD change over is easy - unlike doing this on an iBook! (I can't beleive how complex it is on an iBook!)

    Switch off, remove battery...
Two screws undo the 'HDD' access cover and also the same two screws free the HDD from the m/bd all you have to do is gently pry it away from the m/bd connector then fit the new HDD and power up

I used a free trial version of CasperXP http://www.fssdev.com/ to ghost the image of my 60GB HDD to the new HDD - to do this I used a small portable laptop external case via the USB2 connection. It all went like clockwork - the whole upgrade took about 90mins I guess...[ :)]

first of all..kudos on the hd transfer sequence mayfair.

and yep..it is on a full charge...still on ac. I believe it used to work when it came out of hibernation/standby mode. I'm not entirely sure which mode it is going to actually. How can you tell when your lcds turned off? :p

will try to fiddle around with it a bit more methinks.

    Thanks Aegis.
Hmm, your wake up problem is a bit strange - perhaps it's a driver that you loaded recently that cannot resume from standby - I remember something like this happening on my desktop PC...

As to telling if it's in standby or hibernate mode - if you are in standby mode the 2nd one from the left of the small green leds on the front edge will be flashing, if in hibernate mode then all leds are off except the battery one if you are plugged in and charging (I think!)
