I'm thinking of ordering an LG P300 laptop, and I was wondering if you guys think its one of the top 13' laptops avaliable. Or should I consider a different 13' laptop?

Yes I do, the P310 is better but the P300 still is an awesome choice for $850 (what they normally go for on eBay)

What are you using it for and what features do you need/want in a laptop? The P300 has one of the best GPUs for its class, the only ones that I can recall that beat it are its successor the P310 and Asus' F6Ve.

I'd suggest taking a look at the Lenovo IdeaPad U330 before making a final decision.

What does the IdeaPad U330 got going for it... HD 3450 graphics, good battery life, but few customization options.

consider the Asus F6ve you would also be getting newer technology in the prcoess THOUGH the LG will most likely have the superior screen.

At $850, I'd take the P300 all the way. Like, no contest. The P300 weighs something like 3.6lbs, has a midrange Nvidia 8600M GS graphics card, and manages to keep reasonable temperatures and 3.5 hours of battery life in NBR testing. Tops the U330 in every category; F6Ve is close in performance, but its heavier/more expensive, probably will have worse battery life as well.

I'd personally say that the P300 and P310 are the two best 13" notebooks out there, with the only downpoint being that US availability is nil other than eBay. Build quality and design aren't spectacular, but they aren't bad and the computing power really is that spectacular.

At $850 thought that is probably a refurbed model consider the F6 is new at $1200 its a tough choice and a hard decision. They are both great notebooks though if only the P310 was cheaper.... :)

Has anyone tried replacing the HDD with an SSD in the P300/P310? I know it is "supposed" to be possible but is it in practice?

Just asked in the ssd thread. :) it is. I will have to read up on the internals of the P310 though. apparently you have to remove the keyboard first...

How is it any different? Unless you have to take off the whole bottom?

It's more than 5 minutes, as you have to take off the keyboard and the whole desktop area itself. The HDD resides on the right side of the palm rest.

I recently published instructions on a Polish forum. If you're in a hurry you might use Google Translate and work your way through (the pics will be very helpful, and should be enough if you have some previous notebook manipulation experience :)) I will translate my HowTo into English soon and let you know, where I have published it.

My guess is they wanted to make the laptop as rigid as possible. That's why the whole bottom part of the case is one single magnesium element. The dedicated pockets for RAM and/or HDD could probably make the case less solid.

Looking on the specs on this little guy i would say 'yessum' It looks like its well worth its money, granted you are looking for a small powerhouse.

Yes, it was. Now, the best one in 13" laptop is P310.

Awesome looking machine the P310. I can't believe LG managed to squeeze a 9600 in with decent battery life and make it run cool?! One thing to note, the P300/P310 do not come with internal DVD players, you instead have to use an external optical drive. You probably already know this, just thought I'd throw it in there.

Personally, I would suggest having a look at the Asus F6ve. 13" laptop with decent specs, inbuilt optical drive and ok battery life in a fairly portable package. Plus you get the Asus 2 years international warranty and 1 year accidental coverage. I was going to pick one up, then decided to go with a Lenovo S10 netbook, which I am actually kind of regretting now...
