Installed Vista on my LG S1 Pro Express Dual S1-P402A9

I installed Windows Vista on my LG S1 Pro Express Dual a couple of days ago.

I first used Acronis True Image to backup my HDD and then Acronis Disk Director to create a dual boot environment with a new 20GB partition and installed Vista from scratch. With a few exceptions (listed below), Windows Vista works (nearly) like a charm. Just in case that matters, I have my S1 Pro upgraded to 2GB directly when I purchased it.

As you will see below, the Wireless Network was automagically recognized and installed correctly so I could go online almost immediately. But the wired LAN driver from Agere gave me a bit of headache (I can live with that for a while).

I now have a dual boot S1 Pro with Vista Ultimate and XP Pro. Please note that when I started Windows Vista Update, it also offered me to download the LG Direct Media Button program, which I denied at this point. I thought it's better to wait for a while before I install anything and rather went back to my XP to make a new and clean backup image of my new Vista partition using True Image 9.0 again.

I hope that with the help of other S1 Pro users we will be able to sort out the remaining issues and get Vista going.

Missing drivers/unrecognized hardware in Device Manager:

    Fingerprint Sensor
I didn't really try to find anything yet, since I don't even use it under Windows XP (I find these things on notebooks not good enough compared with the ones where you put your complete finger).

    Mass Storage Controller (aka CardReader)
I've not tried to actually use flash cards, but I guess they won't work in this state. I also didn't look for any drivers yet.

    Unknown Device (Direct Media Buttons)
Windows Update offers an update here, but I denied it. Strangely the buttons seems to work anyway, at least the volume control. In device manager you will see an unknown device, but in the details you'll see LGDMEBTN. I concluded that must be the media buttons, since the lgdmebtn.exe is the application under Windows XP.

Ethernet Controller ** FOUND DRIVER **
I would really love to have the wired Ethernet working, so I started to look for the Agere drivers, but unfortunately wasn't really successful. I am not even sure which Agere Gigabit Ethernet Driver I am looking for.

As you can see, except the LAN driver they are all not really very important IMHO.

    Other known issues:

    No TPM Encryption Chip
When I tried to turn on the new BitLocker encryption, Vista told me that it didn't find a TPM Encryption Chip. Seems that there is a driver missing too, or maybe the included Vista chipset drivers are incomplete or universal ones. I didn't really dig deeper into this.

Here are some screenshots with the hardware IDs:

I found a LAN driver that works from the MSI web site.

The driver is called AGERE ET1310 LAN Driver for Vista and I found it under a MSI Notebook download page:

    http://www.msi.com.tw/program/support/download/dld/spt_dld_detail.php?UID=615&kind=11

    Here is the direct link:
    http://www.msi.com.tw/program/suppo...&kind=11&name=AGERE_ET1310_LAN_Vista32_NB.zip

Just download and start the setup.exe file. Tested on a 100Mbit and 1000Mbit (Gigabit) network switch.

It comes straight from Agere and the date in the .inf file says 2nd of January 2007, so no worries that it would install some MSI stuff we don't want. If I am not wrong this should also work with lots of other notebooks that use the on-board Agere Gigabit Ethernet solution.

antirack. is the TPM enabled in your BIOS? That may be why bitlocker is complaining.

I couldn't find any TPM related option in the BIOS, but I've turned on the display of details during boot and it says "No TPM or TPM has problem" right after showing what CPU I have.

    The BIOS version info is:

    System BIOS Revision = 08/08/2006 RKYWSF1C
    EC BIOS Revision = 0D.21

I couldn't find another BIOS at LG's web sites. Where should that option to enable TPM be? On the notebook is a sticker that clearly says TPM and that is one of the main features mentioned on the LG brochures and web sites about the S1 Pro.

I just found out that I may not have the TPM chip. It says "on select models" and I don't have the BIOS features. Another thing I just noticed is that the specs say "ExpressCard/54 or PCMCIA Type II", and indeed there is only a PCMCIA slot on my model. What's going on with LG?

    I took the specs from:
    http://www.lge.com/download/1136449019431_01_item%20catalog_S1-24.pdf

And on this page it even shows the ExpressCard logo:
    http://www.lge.com/products/model/detail/s1 pro express dual.jhtml

Any other S1 Pro users here?

    Hi,

I also have a S1 Pro M222P, for the missing stuff (card reader and fingerprint) just install the windows XP drivers, as for the TPM mine has TPM and it's detected by vista and bitlocker works fine.

Check us.lgservice.com for drivers... They opened a vista section i hope they post some drivers the next days...

For the sound card get drivers from realtek.com.tw.

I also use the lg OSD app and battery miser and both work ok on Vista, the only problem are the SRS apps that don't work...

Installed vista a few days ago.

Sound didnt work initially. Downloaded and installed vista-versions of Realtek sound drivers, ATI drivers, and synaptic touchpad drivers.

I tried installing OSD XP version, but it does nothing. Is there anything special you did to get it to run? Haven't tried installing the XP card reader drivers.

So no OSD, the touchpad on/off (Fn+F5) switch doesnt work, NHC doesnt work, no card reader, and the fan mode control (Fn+F11) acts strange.

LG (and the NHC dude) had close to a year to go on the ball. Pretty annoying.

Thats one of the reasons I didnt go for LG cuz their site and the ppl here were not all too clear about what is and what isnt on the laptops theyre selling here. Really loved the S1 back then but just was hesitant to spend my cash on a product the sales people couldnt really tell me alot about. couldnt find alot of reviews on the S1 either which might soon change as LG laptops become more popular.

NHC doesnt seem to work on any laptops running vista so far unless you untick the ACPI setting apparently.

As for the OSD, Windows MCE has something called ehtray. Its the program that shows the volume and mute onscreen. search for it in the forums and you will find a link to download the program. basically you add it into a new folder in the Windows directory called ehome so both the .exe and .dll are in there and then add a shortcut for it to your startup folder so itll startup whenever you load windows.

I own a LG S1-P402A9 too... I have a brand new Vista Business I got for free at my job and I plan to install it this week-end. One thing though: I only have 1 GB of RAM. I want to buy a second 1 GB chip, but can't find what the first one is exactly. Would anyone be kind to check his second chip (which can be easily accessed when you open the back plate) and give me all details so I can buy a 100% compatible chip, please?

Thanks a lot! I will also contribute to this topic as soon as Vista is installed on my notebook.

    Hi,
I have the same Notebook - but with Vista Enterprise...

I wrote a mail to LG support, who wrote back that we should expect those drivers by the end of the first week of Feb (which is now).
They have post anything on their site yet, that's why I'm searching for other solutions...

Anyway, I am using old XP drivers just to avoid undetected Hardware, until LG will come up with their solution...

I have LG S1 Pro, when I was using XP, I done serveral full format and reinstalling clean Windows XP onto my laptop. But when I used the disc "LG Intelligent Update" and installed it, as I started installing drivers and softwares, my laptop started freezing and rebooting. Sometimes it won't even turn on! I never knew LG was that unrealiable, I think it's something to do with the Intelligent Updates. I avoided using it again and installed Vista into my S1. But now, I have similar problems to other people in this topic, one of the most bothering problem is the built-in Mic, I can't use it!! Also, I would love the SRS button to work (meaning I want the SRS software too), the Direct Media button and the On-Screen display (all my Fn buttons seem to be decoration), I am still avoiding using the LG Intelligent Update disc. Do you people use it? Is there any problem with it?

On my side I ordered new RAM on friday so I'm going to install Vista at the end of next week I guess. It's true that it would be good to know if LG Intelligent Update can be used (or maybe they have a new version for Vista). I'll make some reseach.

For those of you who installed Windows Vista and have not yet got a sound driver yet, here's a link of the download of the driver for Vista. This will enable you to hear things from earphones when plugged in and would auto switch between speaker and earphones.
Hope you find this useful. :)

I emailed them about it from the Australian site, and got this email..

"There are going to be vista driver updates for this model, however, there has been a delay from the headoffice in Korea to upload all the specific drivers onto the Australian LGE website. At this stage, we have not been informed of when the drivers will be ready on the website. Hence, it is best recommended that you check LGE's website every now and then."

I wonder if that means we can search around for the Korean updates?

Hmm, interesting. I always use USA version for the LG site and not my own country, thought that it should have more updates and stuff. XD :p Well, LG comes from Korea so I should go and have a peek at the Korean version.

I've just installed Vista Business 64-bits. I have to same "problems" you guys had at the beginning. Now I'm looking for 64-bits drivers. Here's what I have now :

    - Direct media buttons and On Screen Display
    - Agere ET1310 LAN drivers
    - Fingerprinter Sensor drivers and program
    - Card reader driver

Thanks for your help and I hope the files I posted up there will help some of you. Anyone has found Vista drivers on LG's website? I can't find anything...

Colin: it's the only version I had access to for free. I haven't check advantages you have running the 64 bits edition, but I guess Windows can use all of my processor's power bore efficiently, but that's only a guess. I would really have to find for reading on the subject.

I saw that the new Realteck drivers have the SRS functions in them and it's great. Now I would really like my SRS button to work, but I can live without. The 2 volume buttons work and it's great...

I'm happy to see my links helped you Calzon_V_ ;)

    Ahhhh I'm sad :(
Visual Studio 6 didn't work!!!!!!! And I need it for college, I'm always programming.
I also wanted 64bits to take full advantage of my processor.

Well I'm gonna make a partition, and I will use xp for programming and vista for other stuff :D But the bad think is that i didn't make the partition so I'll have to format again. :(

Why don't you try reinstalling windows media player?
You can find it in the microsoft website.

Btw, I've problems w/ my speakers, I got Realtek HD audio manager i already configured the outputs for the 5.1 speakers and the Test sounds perfectly, but when I open the audio files, i can't hear anything from the rear speakers.
    Any idea?

I believe you can only download WMP11 for Windows XP. I tried uninstalling the WMP11 that's in Vista but it won't allow me to.

I'm thinking something could be wrong with the codecs?

Hey Calzon, you don't have to format everything in your harddisk to partition your drive. There's this very popular program called GParted. Burn the image onto a CD and you can partition your drive without having to format it, like Norton PartitionMagic (the difference is, GParted is less user-friendly but you can get it for free). I think go to Google and search for GParted and you should get to the site.
You also need some burning program to burn the downloaded image onto the disc.

I am planning to install Windows Vista Business on my LGS1pro.

As far as I can see, the following issues remain unsolved:
    - OSD does not work
    - SRS button does not work (althoug function is now included in realTek driver)

What about all the function buttons? Do they work?
How about battery miser software and button and the fan controll button (silent, normal and cool mode)? Do those work?

Some of them work. Fan control works fine but you have to put your ear next to it in order to know what mode it is in. The mute button also works fine. I haven't tried Batterymiser...

    Can anyone test batterymiser?
@Saorex: Do you use any software to take care of your cpu stepping?
Usually the fan mode works together with battery miser - at least you can set different cpu modes for "silent mode"

I did not install anything. Vista seemed to have the required drivers... About bluetooth, I don't use it but Vista's Bluetooth manager seems to be working fine (no problem turning it off while keeping wireless LAN on).

I havent tried batterymiser in Vista, because I'm not really sure if that will work, since I'm in x64. I know there's the WOW64 (windows of windows 64) wich emulates a lot of x86 applications to work in x64.

But I installed LGDM drivers from the CD, and the fn+key works but you can't see the action on the screen. But indeed you can control wifi/bluetooth w/ fn+f6.

It's obvious that no audio files can be 5.1 surround sound. Yet, if you try to use most 5.1 speakers including both digital and analog they will only play with the front speakers if you play stereo things. When you play DVD movies, half of the time the rear speakers won't play. I think only those Quadraphonic ones (4.0) would play for all speakers even when playing stereo.

i think vista on these machines is just full of issues until proper drivers are and IF released..

right now with my bluetooth when i turn it on, it keeps asking for some drivers, but it wont install them from anywhere.
i even tried the cd and online..

    :(

also i am on wireless internet right beside my router and it says signal is good. not excellent like xp would say

My bluetooth seems to work and most of the important drivers are installed on my Vista. Did you get the lastest updates from Windows? It includes some from LG and ATI. I don't know about bluetooth, it just came up into the taskbar eventually. Lot of people have followed my link and got the Realtek driver, there is SRS but there is only TruSurround and no SRS WOW, my SRS button doesn't seem to work also.
Maybe Vista removed "Excellent" and replaced it with good. When you put your laptop close to the router, does the bar go up to the top?

I have the same issue with my router, but it doesn't seem to be a problem since now I can connect to WLANs I couldn't before. I have absolutly no speed or connectivity problems with my home router even if signal is shown as "Good" instead of "Excellent". Maybe Vista has a new signal power scale as future WLAN technology might have more powerful signal strength... don't know...

colin002, You are wrong, almost all the audio files can be played in 5.1 sound systems, using the 5 speakers and subwoofer.
And indeed, I'm trying the sound with files that I'm sure that uses the whole speakers system. In XP i don't have that problem and I can hear all the speakers, this is just happening w/ vista.

About the router, I noticed that too, it only shows "Good".

Hmm, maybe I was using 4.0 on XP and thought that only 4.0 can play with all speakers. Because my living room's 5.1 analog seems to play with the rear speakers only when the disc tells it to. Anyway, those your 5.1 works normally when you're playing 5.1 DVDs?
