I have had a LS50a laptop for two years and am now having problems with it shutting down. I have had warnings for two weeks about errors and having to shut down so I backed up my work, but it went completely. I have used the recovery CD and it is operating normally again, apart from the message at start-up, as follows:
"SMART failure predicted on hard disk 0 Toshiba. Warning: immediately back-up data and replace hard disk drive. A failure may be imminent".
I guess this says it all, but was hoping someone might have experience with this and can let me know if there is another way?
Thanks

Is the error message really that descriptive? That's pretty neat...and futuristic. I have never heard of a hard drive telling the user when it is about to perish.
Do as the error message told you - get a new hard drive...more importantly, back out that data. Especially if your data is sensitive, then toying with the idea that you can 'fix' the drive is not worth it. -
Agreed. If you've got another disk already installed, copy as much as possible there now.
Then, turn off your computer. Run down and buy a new HD. Install it. Turn on your computer.Copy everything else over to the new disk.
*Then* You can start looking into whether it can be fixed. Most likely, it can't.
Do I need a need a new hard drive?
