I would like to speed up my Y500 SLI but I have no experience with mSata SSDs. If its possible, can you list some possible purchase options?

I believe some users in the Y500 thread did it, but they had to make some adjustments to get it to work. You might want to check out the Y500 thread here.

Yes the y500 supports mSATA SSDs.
I went with a Crucial 256GB mSATA SSD for my Lenovo y400, which is just a bit smaller than the the y500. I actually haven't installed an OS on the SSD yet as my y400 has an unrelated hardware problem (keyboard acts up) so I'm waiting for the new one before I make the effort to boot from the SSD. I'll update with my results (around the 20th).

I'm looking forward to you update. I have the Y400 as well and when I finally pick up my mSATA SSD it'll be good to have an explanation on how to transfer the OS to the new drive.

Ok I tried doing a normal OS install with an image from DVD but couldn't get it to work. I ended up just using Macrium Reflect (free) and cloned my HDD to the mSATA SSD. I got the idea from this thread. Approximate time to complete: ~25-30 minutes, more if you need to transfer more files as I cloned an OS installed just a couple hours prior. (my cloning took nearly 23 minutes)

Edit: As for a guide, it's quite straight forward. Obviously you can't clone the entire 1TB HDD so just clone the minimal amount from the big partition. Once it's cloned just extend the remaining now non-partitioned space on your SSD to the size you want using disk management. (Disk Management is accessible by right clicking the bottom left of the screen)

I'll try to check back to see if anyone had any problems and see if I can help.

I've tried to do the same, but it's not working. It wants to repair my PC just before the windows is loaded. than it could fix it, neither with a reset to factory.

if i install a fresh version of windows 8 how should i activate it? heard that the licence is in the BIOS. is it true?
