I'm getting to add a new laptop to my home network and the W510 has really caught my eye.

Although I'm not gaming right now I might start again down the road. I was wondering if I decide to game down the road is the GPU upgradeable???

Some of the other laptops I'm looking at are the Sager 8790, and the Asus G73.
I love Thinkpads I've been using R-40 for work for years.

Too bad because that screen with the 95% color gamut has me very interested since I do a lot of photo editing, but usually on my desktop.

Isn't NVIDIA Quadro FX 880M Graphics with 1GB DDR3 memory fairly gaming capable?

It is but it's not designed for gaming.

No, as it has been stated, the W510's GPU is not replaceable (like most other laptops). The Thinkpad W701's GPU, however, can be changed out.

While the CPU/RAM/HDD are upgradeable, the GPU is not, as was mentioned.
If you need a gaming system - Clevo/AW is what you should look into (BTW, Sager is a reseller of Clevo systems).
I know why you like ThinkPads, been using R40 for 7 years as well. But they aren't gaming oriented (as always) and can only be used for occasional and light gaming at medium details.

My R-40 is my work laptop and occasionally I used it at home or on vacation for surfing. It's a good solid laptop but I'm looking for something better. I don't game on this laptop at all.

That's why the W510, the Sager 8790 and the Aus G73 has caught my attention. Although the G73 issues has me worried and decided to research my new laptop like I do with everything I buy. :D

    Thanks.

W510 is a solid and reliable system but honestly, not suitable for hardcore gaming. If Lenovo could at least offer a FirePro based on MR5830, things would change.
Still, you're better off with Sager or M15x if gaming is a must.

Unless you want to game away from home, your best bet is the ViDock or to make your own. Check out the threads in the games/GPU forum.
