I'm hoping to configure a T400 with 4GB of RAM and a 64GB SSD. However, this is not an option through the website. To get 4GB of RAM you have to choose Vista Business 64-bit. However, once you do that, you lose the SSD option.

I called Lenovo, and they claimed a note had been issues that cited issues with Vista 64-bit and the SSD. I have a hard time believing this, since (a) all that's needed are proper drivers (not a hardware conflict), (b) my friend purchased an X300 with 4GB of RAM and an SSD recently, and (c) they are still offering the X300 with Vista 64, 4GB of RAM, and an SSD.

My BS detector's flashing red and sirens are going off. Lenovo's supposed to call me back when they look into it more carefully. Anyone have any specific ideas why they would claim this?

In the end, even if it is a Vista 64-bit issue, I'll be using Linux on it anyways. Worse comes to worse, if I dual-boot, I'll use Vista 32-bit and lose some of the RAM.

Some bring some sanity to this, please. :)

Wierd that it would disappear. I hadn't noticed that.

SSD's work fine with 64 bit. That's just silly.

That's like the guy who came into my store today and claimed that he couldn't install Vista X64 on his WD Scorpio, so he called WD and they told him it's impossible, and Vista X64 is not supported.

It's entirely possible that for some reason the specific model drive they offer doesn't have 64-bit drivers yet for vista.

There have been a few instances where this has been the case that I've seen, but still pretty rare.

Pretty sure you don't need a special SSD driver, it's just a regular storage device driver.

Now, I remember reading that article that said Vista was not optimized for SSD's, but it will still run fine. And 64bit would make no difference, the SSD doesn't know it has a 64bit OS on it, only Vista's interaction with it makes a difference and the standard storage driver should work fine.

It would be more about the controller...or specific firmware of the drive, so it should run fine. But if you're going to run nix as well anyways...just go for it :D and play around.

Yeah, I was also trying to get 4GB with SSD... anyway.

(BTW, I remember seeing a Vista 64-bit option in the configure page for X301.)

I hope 3GB is adequate for now. And why don't they offer Vista Ultimate 64-bit? :(

That's because it has SP1 installed. The addressable memory is still 3GB only.
