My guess is broken intel graphics, but I don't know for sure. Any suggestions? Odd thing is it never gave me any hints at a problem, no random shutdowns, nothing that alerted me that there was an issue.

I'd open it and re-seat all the cables and connectors, also clean it from dust and re-paste the GPU&CPU.

If it's out of warranty, just sell it on eBay as parts for whatever you can get and use the proceeds to buy a new one.

have you connected the laptop to an external display to see if it's the graphics card or the screen that is broken?

Yes, you should do that, and also try updating your graphics drivers (or rolling back, if you recently updated) to see if it's a software issue. If it is a hardware issue, my guess is that it's probably not worth repairing.

I doubt it's the drivers, you can see that it's playing up on the BIOS screen so most likely it's a hardware issue. I seen this happen to a Dell Inspiron 1545 but once they replaced the motherboard the issue disappeared.

If you do have warranty then get it fixed otherwise it's probably not worth the expense as the Intel GPU is soldered on which mean you have to replace the whole system board.

external display does nothing and it doesn't last long enough to get into windows. Sometimes it boots just fine, but then a few moments later (like in windows boot screen), it goes to hell.

I'm wondering if it's the RAM? I remember seeing a post about lines like that and it was attributed to dirty RAM contacts. IIRC you use a pencil eraser to clean the RAM contacts.

I'd try taking one stick of RAM out and see if it'll start okay. Then switch RAM and try it again. At least rule that out for us and let us know what happens.

I removed the ram stick and it still didn't work. (the laptop has 1gb of embedded memory)

It seems that it's going to ebay..... hopefully I can destroy the data on the hard drive, it's using some whacky zip connector.

If the screen is usable, you could use DBAN.

Check the lcd cable on the motherboard. It might be the fact that the connector is lose. If that's not the problem then as other people have mention, you need to replace the motherboard.

what i am saying is that if the artifacts are also on the external display then you know that it is a graphics card problem but if it displays fine in the external display then it would be the screen which would be a cheaper repair that the motherboard but still expensive lol

tried it again and nope, doesn't work. When the artifacts pop up, the system is frozen.

Doesn't seem to be the lcd, seem to be the intel gma. Look like your need to sell your laptop on ebay or find a working motherboard and replace it yourself.
