It also depends on the GPU. Quadro FX 570m heats much more than the Quadro NVS 140m and of course than GMA X3100. So GPU makes the CPU a little more hot.

BTW, RM Clock did not support .5x multiplicator. If I use it to undervolt, I have to set the max to 13x and can't use 13.5x.

your t61 looks pretty hot imo, even my old t43p wouldn't get that high temperature.

Then again, the CPU and GPU of the T43p wasn't as hot to begin with.

Those temps are perfectly fine. In fact several of them could be 15-20° higher without incident.

    thanks for your answer.
that temps are the best i can get, that temp happens so rarely.

i asked that question since when i play a game like Crysis and i overclock my GPU, my graphic card gives me error or blue screen.
is there any possibility to fry the GPU due to overclock? or is there any other way to cool better?

Your temps are going to be cooler depending upon your settings in power manager. On "Maximum Performance" you temps are going to be about 10-15 C higher than "Maximum Battery Life" at idle.

I would use tpfancontrol and bump the fan to the max (manual: 7) when gaming, if you are paranoid about temps.

My T61 (w/ nvidia 140m) currently sits about 40-43C at idle and 55 under full load. Previously I had my cpu temp hovers around 55C at idle and 70+C under load. 2 months ago my T61 just stopped working, when I turn it on the screen just shows random colors.

After I get it serviced on IBM service center under warranty, and it got the mainboard replaced. After that, my t61 barely hot. The technician said that it had the fan cleaned, and also using new revision of motherboard. Maybe you should get the fan cleaned?

Mine idles at around 45 now in Ubuntu 8.10 with latest kernel. Core 2 Duo would go up to around 90, but 66 at idling is NOT NORMAL, especially taking into account the fact that it freezes playing games.

What you do is load and run a stress test. Use different ones and see what happens. In any case your laptop should be providing sufficient cooling when using the CPU. Exact thermal specifications would not be under warranty - i.e. different manufacturers react differently if you tell them their provided model is not able to say, cool itself when using 100% CPU 24/7. They may say the computer was not designed to be operated at maximum load all the time. Essentially, this is something that in my knowledge neither consumers nor manufacturers really think about. Lenovo however does put Thinkpads to different thermal tests to see if all laptops are able to cope with heat.

Also, note that the main Thinkpad system fan throttles to around 4500RPM, which is quite an airflow. You should notice how the fan behaves (the RPM) when loading the CPU to the maximum for a prolonged period of time.

In my case, loading the CPU rapidly increases its temperature to about 65*C, at which point the fan kicks in at 3500RPM and simply keeps the CPU under 65* very efficiently from what I saw.

A possible reason for your case is either system hardware malfunction, which is basically when there is some problem with airflow inside either because of dust, or loose parts, malfunctioning fan, loose heatsink, loose heatpipe etc...

Or it can simply be a background process misbehaving, i.e. using around 10% CPU in Windows from startup to shutdown. That would pretty easily put the Core 2 Duo to 66* if left like this since startup for hours. In this case however, your fan should have made sure the temperature drops, which it doesn't do as far as I understand from here.

    CPU 41°C (0x78)
    APS 31°C (0x79)
    PCM 29°C (0x7a)
    GPU 38°C (0x7b)
    BAT 27°C (0x7c)
    BAT 26°C (0x7e)
    BUS 30°C (0xc0)
    PCI 36°C (0xc1)
    PWR 37°C (0xc2)

this is the best one i got after i cleaned the fan with my vacuum cleaner which i use for my carpets :)
i got 4 C cooler than before. before it was 42 C (GPU), now it is 38 C.
and also i used Zalman NC1000 and tp fancontrol full speed in both tests

With my T61 and C2D T7300, with Maximum Performance power profile:
under full load I get temps of 98 C on the CPU running ORTHOS!

Is that too hot? Are people getting similar temperatures with the Maximum Performance power profile?

My load temps are only 55 C with the Maximum Battery Life power profile.

I never feel the heat on my T61 unless I put it on my lap.
