Is my 90W AC Adapter Genuine?

I purchased a 90W Thinkpad AC adapter (40Y7659) directly from Amazon (not marketplace) and I was wondering if my adapter is genuine. The weight of the adapter is much lighter than my previous 90W from my T61. Also, the label's background is grey and not black. Here's some numbers from the adapter:
    PN: 92P1107
    FRU PN: 92P1108
    The adapter is dated 2010.10
    Rev G.

Having a good power supply is always very important. Can anyone compare their adapter with mine? Can Power Manager tell if a genuine adapter is connected?

you mean silver right? Is the tip of the adapter is light grayish and not dark grey? If that is the case, then most likely it is a knock off. I got one of these one.

    The power manager can't tell.

What is the colour of the cable tie? black or silver?

See the above link for a comparison of the labels.

Comparing the tips to those of my friends, the grey color varies. The adapter I bought is slightly lighter gray, but another genuine adapter my friend has is similar in color.

    The cable tie is gray/silver.

Are you concerned with using the knock off adapter?

Yeah...now that you mention it...the logo is different.
There is no "teardrop" shape in the fake. The O hole is smaller. The V cut isn't as deep.
But why would Amazon sell fake adapters?

You might want to contact Mark@Lenovo about this. He'd be better able to confirm if it's genuine (and to help take action if it turns out it's not.)

Fake AC adapters can be very bad news.

yes the genuine adapter come in a box with a red security seal sticker.

On the backside of the Adapter, is the Lenovo logo printed or is it a negative cast on the casing?

The printed version on the bottom is a fake one.

Since early 2007, Lenovo stopped using printed logo on their power adapters, and instead use a variety of negative cast of their logo.

Also what is the distance measurement you get here?

The real one measure between 17 to 29 mm (i measured around 60 adapters). The fake one is usually very long, usually 30 mm+ due to the type of manufacturing system they use.

The cable on top is the fake one, the plastic on the DC plug is a lighter grey.

It's not Amazon itself, it's a seller using Amazon to sell those products.

Do you work for Lenovo or in some IT position? By the way, Lenovo may have several manufacturing plants for different geo locations. His grey adapter appears to be for the Chinese market. Not sure if it's fake. All my adapters have black labels, 2 of them are 65W though and only 1 is 90W.

nope i don't work for Lenovo. I am a volunteer brand ambassador/evangelist, but i don't get paid or anything like that.

I have 50 odd Lenovo ThinkPads, so that is where these power adapters originated.

Lenovo uses Delta, Lite-on and ASTEC for manufacturing of these power adapters.

50? That's impressive. If there are old models involved you can probably open a museum of technology progress or something.

40 of them are probably Lenovo ThinkPads, so not in the old models arena.

Thanks for the link. You should notify "SF.ALLRETIRE" and amazon.com the item is not actually made by Lenovo.

It's possible the seller didn't know the item was counterfeit, but I doubt it.

I don't know the measurements of the grey park. Already packed it up for replacement.

I bought it directly from Amazon LLC and NOT SF.ALLRETIRE.
Many of the sellers do sell third party adapters though. The generic page description isn't always reflect the actual items the sellers have. However, one would assume the product from Amazon LLC is a genuine product.

I pretty sure it's fake. The logo differences and the significantly lighter weight of the adapter indicates low quality parts. Heavier bricks and PSU usually indicate higher quality.

There is lot of negative comments there.

Counterfeit power adapter for ThinkPads can be purchased in many areas. And sometimes, the if the counterfeiter is resourceful enough, they can mix and match fake and real parts. So you get a hybrid counterfeit.

Never know what kind of quality the fakes are built with, asside from possibly frying your system when it malfunctions you could run into issues serious enough that they could cause a fire. It's just not worth taking the risk.

SF.ALLRETIRE is an infamous seller, I bought two batches 90w adapters, 50 in total, for my company, and ALL the adapters are FAKE.
I've left hime two negtive and reported it to Amazon, but it's not enough to kick him out.
SF.ALLRETIRE contacted me later for replacement of genuine ones after I left him neg, and apparently this seller does not stop fooling buyers as most buyers have no idea how to determine if it's genuine or not.
I'd recommend OP to do the same, leave the seller neg without compromise, and report it to Amazon.

The easiest way to tell if it's genuine is to check the weight, genuine one should be around 330g to 340g. And the SF.ALLRETIRE's product is 300g.

I'd also recommend every forum member to buy one or more from this seller, return for full refund later, and leave him negative, report it to Amazon.

I've told the seller how to determine if the adapter is genuine, when he claimed that he did not know such a situation and would call back all adapters.
As according to my experience, the seller is apprantly INTENTIONALLY SELLING FAKE adapters.

the problem with fake is that the plastic sheath, copper wire and other electronics components MAY not up to standard (i.e. thinner wire or high impurity copper wire). The result is overheating and wire exposing themselves as the result of brittle plastic.

    Very dangerous.

That was my philosophy up until the day that I watched my first counterfeit power brick catch on fire. (Admittedly, it wasn't for a ThinkPad but rather an iBook... but the principle's the same.)

Just to update. I received my replacement today. The box came sealed with Lenovo's security sticker. The weight and color of the adapter label all seem appropriate. I'm pretty confident it's a genuine adapter. Thanks everyone for your help.

i found this site after I purchased my adapter 65w from Amazon and got one from this seller ALLRETIRE. i contacted amazon and bought one from Amazon themselves. the price of ALLRETIRE's was $19.99 and the Amazon authentic one which is direct from Lenovo was $49.19 with tax. I took some pictures and wanted to clarify the situation. after receiving the Amazon Lenovo charger I compared the two. they are identical. I will be returning Amazon's charger.

the one bought from Amazon and shipped via amazon is on the left, the stained box (dug it out of the garbage after i found this site) is on the right. same goes for the chargers. left one is amazons, right one is ALLRETIRE's.

when i saw the picture of the adapter without any documentation (off amazon) i freaked out and ordered a new one to compare them,

now that i've checked them both out i am satisfied and firmly believe that ALLRETIRE's are legit.

I received a fake adapter directly from Amazon which came in a box similar to the one pictured in the previous post. So there is no guarantee that the previous post's adapters are genuine. I believe that some fakes have somehow been mixed in with Amazon's inventory.

The easiest sure way to tell if it is genuine is to look for the red security label for Lenovo products.

Amazon sources their inventory direct from Lenovo. When I ordered my OEM battery it came exactly how you said it, with the red tape and documentation. the adapters I am unsure of.

how sure are people in regards to the 65w ultraport adapter coming packaged like that?

Here is a not so clear picture of Lenovo's retail packaging for power adapters, note the security seal at the bottom.

And here is Lenovo's manufacturer bulk (non-retail) packaging. Also note that it has the standard Lenovo product label and security seal.

I think you should contact Lenovo via Email to find out whether the ones you received is genuine, you can find their customer support email on the website. Make sure you include pictures of the packaging, bar code, as well as the adapter label.

I want to add this one to the list as well:
    GENUINE LAPTOP ADAPTER CHARGER FOR IBM/LENOVO ThinkPad T60 3000 C N V T60 Z60 UK | eBay

I choose it because it says 146 sold, + about the same amount for the old version. I thought so many people cannot be cheated. But they can. It's the worst copy I've ever seen.
    1. IBM logo instead of Lenovo
    2. Extra long neck
    3. No Lenovo logo at the back
    4. Plastic feels different (OK, this is the hardest to notice)

The 'neck' on mine is about 5 cm, but look at this image from the eBay page. That's like a giraffe! On the other hand, the adapter on this image seems genuine, totally different to the one I received.
    CIMG5666.JPG

So mine is 120,000+ ebay power seller selling totally fake stuff, every single one of them called 'GENUINE'. It'a name is digital.power

Of course you'll get a fake, this seller is only selling `GENUINE` stuff, what means all of it is fake. Look at his negative reviews:

    The adapter bricks seldom fail.

It is the wires that fail.

Anyone know of an independent web site that sells the wires???

That's naivety ^ 2. The bricks matter the most. If you haven't seen laptops and mobile phones burned out because of cheap adapter? I've seen a couple and I've seen numerous friends experiencing huge problems because of aftermarket adapters. Also, I was living with someone once, who had a cheap adapter for his Toshiba laptop. Every single time she plugged in her adapter, all the FM radios started producing loud static noise in the flat, which only stopped when she unplugged it.
