I think I have read something before about how the keyboard on the X300 is made of a new material that is more resistant to wear. I went to J&R (a big electronics store in NYC) today and checked out the several Thinkpads they had on display. The keyboards did seem to have a different texture than the one on my T61p. The plastic material on the palmrest feel somewhat different too. Can someone confirm this?

Were the ThinkPads you checked out in NYC the current ThinkPad lineup (T61(p))? There are different models of keyboards, I suppose it's possible that the material could differ slightly.

Yep, the x300 key caps have a slightly different texture which feels a bit smoother than the older Thinkpads. The key caps also appear to be a little glossy. The coating is supposed to wear better over time. The palm rest/top cover on the X300 has a soft touch coating over the plastic. The feel is a bit more organic.
