Good day everyone, let me start by saying I've already placed an order for an X301 (I ordered one with 64GB SSD, Windows 7, 3GB ram). After doing this, I've noticed that I'm really paying top dollar for a machine that's been out for the last 14 months. I then started to look at the T400s, and configured one that has 128GB SSD, full multi-touch screen, etc. basically fully loaded for like $200 more then the X301. Should I cancel the X301, and order the T400s ? My main concern I guess is that I am paying top dollar for (basically) older technology.
I originally wanted the X301 because I figured I'd keep my 15.4 inch T61 as my primary computer, and just have something smaller for the road. I will NOT be doing anything intensive on my new laptop, just watching movies, songs, etc. Something I can browse the net on and take on trips, on the plane, at the laundromat, etc.
What are your thoughts ? Should I just get the X301 ? (I managed to get it for $1924 with CT sales tax), or cancel and get a T400s ?

For the use you describe, I would rather recommend you to get the X200(s) or the older X61(s). Although the X301 is a fine machine, I think you would appreciate the smaller footprint, especially when using it on flights. I air travel a couple of times every month, mostly on economy class. The smaller footprint of X200/X61 is very useful considering the cramped space - especially when the passenger in front of you recline the seat.
In addition, the X200 is a powerhouse compared to the X301 and still has great battery life. My config is 2.4 GHz with 128GB SSD - running XP. Extremely fast and smooth. The only possible con I see is no built-in optical drive. But I only use this for installing software anyway, which is less than 1% of the time I use my computers. -
i would think x200 or t400s too, to be honest, main drawback of the x30_ is the performance...

15 months may seem like an antique in computer years but if it fits your needs, it fits your needs. whether the T400s fits your needs better, i can't say. personally, i'm a big fan of the X300/X301 design. it's one of the best-looking thinkpads to come along in years.
regarding processing power, you don't need it given what you've described. the SSD will make your system quick and responsive. i owned an X300 about two years ago and never found it to be slow -- and this is coming from someone with an 8-core thinkstation with more processing power than 99% of people need. -
Thank you for the responses.
I figured I'd just go ahead with the X301. That is after all what I originally wanted anyway. An ultra portable. I will NOT be doing any CPU intensive things on it anyway. Just the Internet, Microsoft Word, downloading some music (1,000 songs or so at most), and watching movies (why I NEEDED an optical drive). The T400s is a great choice, but I think I'd like the X301 better -

As far as you feel good about your purchase, others opinions are pointless
I guess the X301 makes you the new Mister Cool lol -
After seeing the X300 when it first came out last year, then the X301 following it, I just LOVED how small it was. My 15.4" T61 will dwarf it lol -
I have been using one for nearly a year. It's a great machine but does have several drawbacks (no docking solution, 128Gb drive). Even so, it's the best machine I have found in the thin /light family. Very acceptible performance too. Upgrade to W7 was easy and made a differance, so skip Vista. Good luck.
Is it stupid to order the X301 ??
